The Freiburg scavenger hunt starts on Platz der Alten Synagoge and passes the University of Freiburg on the way to the Martinstor and the Schwabentor, two medieval city gates. On Münsterplatz you see the Historical Merchants’ Hall and Freiburg Minster, then continue via the Markthalle and the Bertoldsbrunnen to the New Town Hall and the twin towns’ coats of arms.
The 10 stops cover about 2 km, roughly 24 minutes of walking. You can start anywhere or change the order in the app, with Google Maps guiding you. No entry tickets are needed: every riddle uses the outside of the buildings.
Freiburg lies at the edge of the Black Forest, and its old town is made for walking. Small water channels called Bächle run along the streets, the red sandstone Minster towers over Münsterplatz, and the university, founded in 1457, is one of the oldest in Germany. Local legend says that if you step into a Bächle, you will marry someone from Freiburg.
