Why explore Dortmund with a city game
Dortmund was a Free Imperial City and Hanseatic town in the Middle Ages before coal, steel and beer made it an industrial centre. You see both eras on foot: St. Reinold’s Church, named after the city’s patron saint, the Eagle Tower on the line of the old city wall, and the Dortmund U, a former brewery crowned by a giant golden U.
A game makes you look past the shopping streets to the details and stories behind them. Each riddle points you to a façade, a plaque or a sculpture, and the stories that follow explain what you just saw. Everyone plays on their own phone, with no schedule.
- Start in the morning or late afternoon; on match days, streets near the station and football museum get crowded.
- Start the escape game in daylight; its puzzles rely on details on façades and monuments.
- Bring a charged phone, a power bank and comfortable shoes.
- Combine the game with a visit inside the German Football Museum or the art spaces in the Dortmund U.
