Monaco is a sovereign country smaller than New York's Central Park, squeezed between the mountains and the sea on the French Riviera. Into about two square kilometres it fits a palace on a rock, a 19th-century casino, a Formula 1 circuit through its streets and whole districts built on land taken from the sea. Here are the facts and stories behind it.
10 leuke weetjes over Monaco
- The world's second-smallest country: only Vatican City is smaller. Monaco covers roughly two square kilometres, which makes it one of the most densely populated countries on earth.
- Citizens may not gamble: Monégasques are not allowed into the gaming rooms of the Casino de Monte-Carlo. The casino company was founded in 1863, and the building's grand façade and opera hall are the work of Charles Garnier, architect of the Paris Opera.
- Named after a prince: the headland opposite the Rock was called Les Spélugues until 1866, when it was renamed Monte-Carlo, 'Mount Charles', in honour of Prince Charles III.
In the 13th century, Genoa was torn between two factions, the Guelphs and the Ghibellines, and the Grimaldis, a Guelph family, had been driven out of the city. On the night of 8 January 1297, the story goes, a Franciscan friar knocked at the gate of the Ghibelline fortress on the Rock of Monaco and asked for shelter. Once the gate was opened he drew a sword from under his habit, and his men stormed in behind him. The friar was François Grimaldi, remembered as Malizia, 'the cunning'. He held the fortress for only a few years, and the family lost and regained the Rock several times before their rule became permanent in the 15th century.
Monaco-Ville, de Rots, uitgelegd
Monaco-Ville is the old town on the rocky headland that juts into the sea, and it is where Monaco began. Its narrow lanes hold the Prince's Palace, St Nicholas Cathedral, the Oceanographic Museum and small squares with views over both harbours. Every day just before noon the Carabiniers of the Prince change the guard in the palace square, a ceremony that in its present form dates back to the early 19th century. Look up at the street signs: many are written in French and in Monégasque, the local dialect, which children still learn at school.
Wat je moet eten in Monaco
- Barbajuans: small fried pastry parcels filled with Swiss chard, ricotta and parmesan, Monaco's signature snack and a fixture around National Day on 19 November.
- Monaco is steil.
