Roman gates, a king in a toga and the Smiling Angel

The Reims scavenger hunt is a self-guided city game you play on your phone: you walk from landmark to landmark, solve a riddle at each one by looking closely at what is in front of you, and unlock the stories and legends behind it. From Square Colbert to the fountain on Place Drouet d'Erlon you cover 2.5 km and 10 stops in barely 31 minutes on foot, and the riddles and stories stretch that into a game of roughly 2 hours that begins whenever you decide.

Highlights include the Roman Porte de Mars and the Cryptoportique, Place Royale with its statue of Louis XV, the Art Deco Carnegie Library and the cathedral where French kings were crowned for centuries, home of the Smiling Angel. The centre of Reims is compact, so Roman remains, royal squares and Art Deco façades all lie within a short walk of each other.

A game through Reims, from Roman Durocortorum to the café square

Riddles carved in stone

Each stop hides its riddle in something you can see from outside: the carved vaults of the Porte de Mars, the bronze Louis XV on Place Royale, the doorway of the Carnegie Library. No history lesson is needed beforehand, because what you need to know about Durocortorum, the kings and the Art Deco rebuilding is written on the walls themselves.

Kings, Romans and one of Napoleon's generals

Each answer unlocks a story: how Joan of Arc brought Charles VII to his coronation in the cathedral in 1429, why Louis XV stands on his pedestal in Roman dress, and which son of Reims gave his name to the final square. Switch on the audio narration and these tales of Reims are read to you between the Roman arch and the cathedral.

On foot from Colbert's square to the Subé fountain

The walking adds up to about 31 minutes, from the green Square Colbert past the Roman remains on Place du Forum to the cathedral and on to the long pedestrian square at the end. Google Maps steers you through central Reims, and from the forum to Place Royale and on to the cathedral each leg takes only a few minutes.

Breaks on Place Royale or at a café

No clock is running, so sit down on Place Royale or order a coffee on Place Drouet d'Erlon whenever you feel like it, and resume the game later that day or on another one. Where to taste local specialities in Reims and which shops are worth a look, the app tells you as you go.

Between arrival and a Champagne cellar

At about 2 hours, the game slots in neatly between your arrival and a cellar visit, or fills the first afternoon of a weekend in Reims. In one short walk you meet the Roman, the royal and the Art Deco faces of the city.

Young players like finding the she-wolf with Romulus and Remus under the Roman arch, the king dressed as an emperor and the Smiling Angel by a cathedral portal, and at the end the gilded Victory on top of the fountain. Every team needs an adult, and 2.5 km is a manageable distance for children.

Colleagues and friends in teams of five

Split your group into teams of up to five, each player on their own phone, and let them leave Square Colbert a few minutes apart, all heading first for the Porte de Mars. Place Drouet d'Erlon, lined with cafés and restaurants, is an easy place to regroup once everyone has finished.

  • No entry tickets needed: everything happens outside the buildings. Going inside is optional and paid separately.

The hunt starts at Square Colbert and heads to the Porte de Mars, the Roman arch on the northern edge of the centre. It continues to Place du Forum, with the Musée-Hôtel Le Vergeur and the Cryptoportique, then to Place Royale, the Carnegie Library and the cathedral. After the Palais de Justice and the Opéra, it finishes among the cafés of Place Drouet d'Erlon. Every riddle in Reims is answered from the street or the square in front of it, so not one stop needs an entry ticket, and if you would rather open the game at the cathedral than at Square Colbert, the app lets you pick that first stop and rearrange the rest.

    This small green square is named after Jean-Baptiste Colbert, the powerful minister of King Louis XIV, who was born in Reims. It is a calm place to get your bearings before the route leads you to the Roman remains and the Gothic cathedral of the city centre.

    The Porte de Mars is a Roman arch from the 3rd century AD and the only one left of the four monumental gates of Durocortorum, as Reims was called in Roman times.     This old town mansion stands on Place du Forum, a square that was once a market place and, long before that, part of the Roman forum. Today it is a museum, with rooms of old furniture, paintings and prints.

    Place Royale was laid out in the 18th century on part of the old Roman forum and is framed by uniform classical façades. In the centre stands King Louis XV dressed as a Roman emperor: Pigalle's original statue of 1765 was destroyed in the Revolution and replaced in 1818 by a bronze by Pierre Cartellier, while Pigalle's pedestal figures survived.

    The Bibliothèque Carnegie is one of the finest Art Deco buildings in Reims, a city largely rebuilt after the destruction of the First World War. It was paid for by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, the American foundation of the steel magnate Andrew Carnegie. Look closely at the decoration of its entrance.

    Notre-Dame de Reims was begun in 1211, after a fire destroyed the earlier church, and French kings were crowned here for centuries, from Henry I in 1027 to Charles X in 1825. Joan of Arc made it possible for Charles VII to be crowned here in 1429, and the famous Smiling Angel is carved beside one of its portals.

    The Palais de Justice, the courthouse of Reims, stands a short walk from the cathedral. Its formal stone façade, designed to express the authority of the law, makes a sober contrast with the Gothic sculpture next door, and courts still sit here today.

    Eine andere Art eine Stadt kennenzulernen ohne sich selber Gedanken machen zu m?ssen. Die Tour f?hrt zu allen wichtigen Sehensw?rdigkeiten und gibt Erkl?rungen dazu und nat?rlich R?tsel zum L?sen. Wir waren 1 Team von 10 Personen. Nicht jeder hat am Spiel teilgenommen sodass nicht alle Tickets benutzt wurden. Die App benutzt man um die R?tsel zu l?sen. Google f?hrt den Spieler zu den verschiedenen Punkten. Man springt also sozusagen zwischen 2 Apps hin und her. Das ist ok, aber wir haben das nicht gleich gecheckt. Die Route, die angezeigt wurde, war komischerweise nicht bei jedem Spieler die Gleiche. Also immer aufpassen, den richtigen Weg zu nehmen. Trotzdem coole Erfahrung.

    We really enjoyed our visit with the guide. We hadn’t visited the city before, and once we got going, it was a great way to find our way round and see the main sites.. We found the app was a little confusing to use. Didn’t realise we had to download a second app. Luckily I had a good data package to use in the city. The information included was good, plenty for our family, though again navigating the app for some apps was a little frustrating. Overall, value wise was food for a family activity, that can be done at our own pace.

    Het was leuk Reims te ontdekken met deze app. Wel was de middeleeuwse poort niet te bezichtigen ivm groot onderhoud, terwijl deze wel in de route stond. Ook was een van de attracties niet bereikbaar (afgesloten bouwplaats) en stond er een podium over de middeleeuwse opgravingen op het plein heen, waardoor we ook daar niet konden komen.

    We hadden er meer van verwacht. De audio gids is niets meer dan een robotstem dat heel hakkelig praat. Je leest het dus beter zelf. Ook lezen de tekstjes niet altijd even vlot. Je ziet dat er letterlijke vertalingen zijn gebeurd. Het is heel droog en puur informatief, weinig verhaal. De rondleiding doorheen de stad lukte wel zeer goed en is handig. Al vinden we 13 euro voor een gps met wat Wikipedia uitleg veel geld.

    Nadat ik alles had gedownload, liep alles heel vlot. Reims is een mooie bruisende stad en dankzij deze zoektocht werd het voor mijn kinderen van 8 en 11 jaar ook interessant. Enkele belangrijke toeristische attracties werden onder handen genomen, waardoor we niet alles konden oplossen, maar dat kon de pret niet bederven.

Allow about 2 hours from Square Colbert to Place Drouet d'Erlon, of which only around 31 minutes are spent walking the 2.5 km between the 10 stops, while the riddles, the stories and the carvings of the Porte de Mars and the cathedral fill the rest. If a café on Place Royale tempts you halfway, pause the game there and carry on when you are ready.

Why does the game start at Square Colbert, and where does it end?

The small green square bears the name of Jean-Baptiste Colbert, Louis XIV's minister and a native of Reims, which makes it a fitting first riddle before the Roman arch, and the last one is set on Place Drouet d'Erlon by the Subé fountain and its gilded Victory. If your hotel is closer to the cathedral or the Opéra, the app can turn that stop into your opening riddle instead.

Does someone meet us at Square Colbert, or do we book a slot?

Neither: once your booking reference reaches you by email and is entered in the World City Trail app, the riddles of Reims open whenever you choose, in the morning or the evening, today or later in your stay. Each player has a ticket, and the whole team sees the same riddle about Colbert, the kings or the Romans on their own phones.

Does anything along the Reims route cost extra?

The game asks for nothing beyond your ticket, since you look down into the Cryptoportique and read the cathedral's portals from outside. Visiting the rooms of the Musée-Hôtel Le Vergeur or the cellars of a Champagne house is a separate, paid outing you can fit in before or after.

Which carvings and statues in Reims will children like most?

Quite a lot, provided each team includes an adult: the she-wolf suckling Romulus and Remus in the vaults of the Porte de Mars, the sunken Roman gallery on Place du Forum, a king dressed up as a Roman emperor and, at the finish, the golden winged Victory on the Subé fountain. Wheelchair users cannot follow this route, and families with a pushchair should expect some hard going between the Roman arch and the cathedral.

Our group speaks three languages between us. Can everyone in Reims read the riddles in their own?

Yes: English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Dutch are all available for Reims, and since every player sets their own language in the World City Trail app, a German speaker and a Spanish speaker can work out the riddle at the Porte de Mars side by side.

Can a company or a big circle of friends take on Reims together?

It does: with one ticket per person and teams of up to five, groups can leave Square Colbert at intervals and meet again over a drink among the cafés of Place Drouet d'Erlon at the end. Because the game runs through the public streets and squares of Reims, there is no room to hire and nothing to arrange beyond the tickets.

Is there anything to bring besides a phone?

Each team needs a charged smartphone with mobile data, ideally backed up by a power bank, plus comfortable shoes for the 2.5 km between the Roman arch, the cathedral and the café square. Champagne weather can turn quickly, so a light rain jacket rarely goes to waste.
