The route: from Republic Square to The Victor

The Belgrade scavenger hunt starts on Republic Square, between the National Theatre and the National Museum. From there you continue to the Educational Institution of Belgrade, the University of Belgrade and Studentski Park, then enter Kalemegdan past the site where the city keys were handed to the Serbs in 1867, the Monument of Gratitude to France and the King’s Gate, and finish at The Victor (Pobednik), looking out over the rivers.

The route covers about 2.1 km, roughly 29 minutes of walking. You can start anywhere or change the order in the app, with Google Maps guiding you. No entry tickets are needed: every riddle uses the outside of the buildings.

Why explore Belgrade with a city game

Belgrade grew up where the Sava flows into the Danube, and Kalemegdan Fortress has guarded that confluence for centuries. Republic Square, with its equestrian statue of Prince Mihailo, is the city’s favourite meeting point, the National Museum was founded in 1844, and The Victor, a bronze statue by Ivan Meštrović from 1928, has become a symbol of the city.

A game makes you look closely at façades, statues and inscriptions you would otherwise miss, and the stories explain what you see. Everyone plays on their own phone, with no schedule and time for coffee or ćevapi whenever you like.

  • Start in the morning or late afternoon; in summer, midday is hot and the centre gets busy.
  • Start the escape game in daylight, and time the hunt to reach Kalemegdan for sunset over the rivers.
  • Bring a charged phone, a power bank and comfortable shoes.
  • Finish with a walk through Kalemegdan Park or dinner in a kafana in the bohemian Skadarlija quarter.
