Belgrade on a river cruise: a self-guided city game from the Sava

Yes, easily. River-cruise ships dock at the passenger terminal on the Sava in Savamala, along Karađorđeva below Belgrade Fortress. Our scavenger hunt starts at Republic Square, about 20-30 minutes' uphill walk away, or about 10 minutes by taxi. The hunt takes about 2 hours over roughly 2.1 km and ends at the Victor monument in Kalemegdan, above the river near the port, so the walk back down is short and a normal Belgrade call leaves a good margin.

From the Sava terminal to Republic Square

  1. Leave the ship at the Sava passenger terminal. Ships are sometimes moored side by side, so you may have to cross another vessel; ask for your pontoon number before you go.
  2. On foot: climb from the waterfront by the Kosančićev Venac staircases or up the Kalemegdan side, then follow the pedestrian Knez Mihailova street to Republic Square. Count about 20-30 minutes, uphill, for roughly 2 km.
  3. To save the climb, take an official taxi with the meter on, or a ride app such as CarGo: about 10 minutes. City buses, trams and trolleybuses are free for all passengers since 1 January 2025 and take about 10-15 minutes, but routes change often, so check a live map.
  4. At Republic Square, open the app and start the hunt. Google Maps navigation in the app leads you from stop to stop.

Tips for Belgrade when time is short

  • The walk from the river to the centre climbs from river level and may include steps, so wear sturdy shoes.
  • A taxi or tram up to Republic Square saves the climb at the start; the hunt ends in the fortress park, from where the walk down to the Sava is shorter.
  • Ships can be rafted side by side, so ask for your pontoon number and allow time to cross other ships on the way back.
  • Summer can be very hot: carry water and plan the climb for the cooler part of the day.
  • Carry some dinars, although cards work widely in the centre.
  • Start back at least an hour before all-aboard time.

Why a self-guided game works on a port day

  • You start when you step off the ship, not at a fixed tour time, and nobody waits for a group.
  • Everyone in your party can follow on their own phone with one booking reference.
  • You can stop for lunch or a swim and carry on later, and end the game whenever you need to head back.
  • Google Maps guides you from stop to stop, and the game needs no entry tickets.

Belgrade river-cruise stop: questions

Where do river cruise ships dock in Belgrade?

At the passenger terminal on the Sava river in Savamala, along Karađorđeva below Belgrade Fortress, near the Beton Hala waterfront.

Can I walk from the Belgrade cruise port to the city centre?

Yes, but it is uphill: about 15-25 minutes to the edge of Kalemegdan (about 1 km) and about 20-30 minutes to Republic Square (about 2 km).

How far is Republic Square from the port?

About 2 km uphill from the Sava berths, at the far end of Knez Mihailova street; allow 20-30 minutes on foot or about 10 minutes by taxi.

Is public transport free in Belgrade?

Yes. Since 1 January 2025 city buses, trams, trolleybuses and the BG Voz train are free for all passengers, according to the Tourist Organization of Belgrade.

Does the hunt take me to Kalemegdan?

Yes. It ends at the Victor monument in the Kalemegdan park, above the river and near the port, so you finish close to your ship.

Do I need to book a time slot?

No. You book online, receive your booking reference by email straight away and start whenever you are ashore. The ticket has no time limit, so it still works if your ship arrives late or your plans change.

What do we need on the day?

A charged smartphone with mobile data, the World City Trail app from the App Store or Google Play, and your booking reference. A power bank helps on a long port day.
