Cádiz on a cruise stop: from the port to the old town

Yes, Cádiz is one of the easiest cruise ports to see on your own. Ships berth at quays right beside the old town, and from the cruise terminal it is about a 5-10 minute flat walk to Plaza de San Juan de Dios. From there the cathedral, the Roman Theatre, Torre Tavira, the Mercado Central and La Caleta beach are all within walking distance. Our city guides help you plan the day.

From the cruise port to Cádiz old town

  1. Large ships usually berth at Muelle Alfonso XIII, with Muelle Reina Sofía alongside, and passengers go through the cruise terminal there. Other ships use Muelle Ciudad, which has its own maritime station at the edge of the historic centre.
  2. From the terminal walk out of the port gate on Avenida del Puerto to Plaza de San Juan de Dios. It takes about 5-10 minutes and the way is flat.
  3. On busy days some ships are sent to Muelle Marqués de Comillas, further out. Take the port shuttle bus from there to the Muelle Ciudad maritime station rather than walking through the working port; the ride takes a few minutes.
  4. Prefer to ride? Taxis wait near the terminal exit on cruise days and reach the centre in about 5 minutes.

Tips for Cádiz when time is short

  • The old town is compact, flat and pedestrian-friendly, so everything is walkable straight from the ship.
  • Cádiz can host three or four large ships on the same day, with more than 10,000 passengers on record days. The centre and the cathedral get crowded in mid-morning, so go there first.
  • If your ship is at Muelle Marqués de Comillas, use the port shuttle bus to the terminal.
  • The waterfront is sunny and the city is often windy: bring sun protection and a light layer.
  • Load our city guides before you go ashore: they work offline, so you have a tip for each place in the narrow streets even without signal.

Why take our city guides ashore

  • They work offline, so you don’t need mobile data or roaming in port.
  • Six guides in one: where to eat, what to see, what to do with kids, going out, day trips and saving money.
  • A short list of places worth your limited time, with a tip for each one.
  • Buy before you sail and open them on your phone as soon as you step ashore.

Cádiz cruise stop: questions

Can you walk from the Cádiz cruise port to the old town?

Yes. The cruise terminal sits beside the historic centre, about a 5-minute walk from Plaza de San Juan de Dios.

Do cruise ships tender in Cádiz?

No. Ships berth at the quays: Alfonso XIII, Reina Sofía, Ciudad or Marqués de Comillas.

Is Cádiz hilly?

No. The old town on its peninsula is flat and easy to explore on foot, so you can reach La Caleta beach and the Castillo de San Sebastián without a climb.

What if my ship docks at Marqués de Comillas?

Passengers from that quay are taken by shuttle bus to the Muelle Ciudad maritime station, from where the centre is a short walk.

Do the city guides work without mobile data?

Yes. Once opened on your phone they also work offline, which helps in ports where roaming is expensive.

Can I buy just one guide?

Yes. You can choose a single guide, such as the food guide, or all six guides for the city.
