Cagliari on a cruise stop: a self-guided city game from the port

Yes: Cagliari works well on a cruise stop, because our scavenger hunt ends right where the port shuttle picks you up. Ships normally dock at Molo Rinascita, at the edge of the city centre, with no tendering. A port shuttle, usually free, takes about 5-10 minutes to Piazza Matteotti. From there you walk uphill through the old town, or take a taxi, to the Giardini Pubblici, where the 3-hour hunt starts and works its way down through Castello.

From Molo Rinascita to the Giardini Pubblici

  1. Take the port shuttle bus from the ship to the port entrance near Piazza Matteotti, beside the train and bus stations. It is usually free and takes about 5-10 minutes; listen to onboard announcements, as the drop-off can vary.
  2. From Piazza Matteotti, walk up through the old town towards the Castello district and on to the Giardini Pubblici at its northern end, near Porta Cristina. The streets climb steadily and include stairs.
  3. Free public lifts link the lower town with Castello and save some of the climbing, which helps if stairs are hard for you.
  4. To skip the climb completely, take a taxi from the Piazza Matteotti and Via Roma area straight up to the Giardini Pubblici.

Tips for Cagliari when time is short

  • Castello sits on a limestone hill, so expect steep streets and staircases and wear sturdy shoes rather than sandals.
  • Free public lifts connect the lower town with Castello and help you avoid the steepest stairs.
  • Do the uphill part early, before the midday heat, as shade is limited on some streets; carry water.
  • The hunt ends at Piazza Matteotti, next to the shuttle point, so the way back to the ship is short, even on tired legs.
  • Hills take longer than a map suggests, so keep at least 1 hour before all-aboard time as your buffer.

Why a self-guided game works on a port day

  • You start when you step off the ship, not at a fixed tour time, and nobody waits for a group.
  • Everyone in your party can follow on their own phone with one booking reference.
  • You can stop for lunch or a swim and carry on later, and end the game whenever you need to head back.
  • Google Maps guides you from stop to stop, and the game needs no entry tickets.

Cagliari cruise stop: questions

Where do cruise ships dock in Cagliari?

Normally at Molo Rinascita, at the edge of the city centre. No tendering is needed.

Is there a shuttle from the cruise ship into Cagliari?

Yes. A port shuttle bus runs from the ship to the port entrance near Piazza Matteotti; check the onboard announcements for the exact drop-off.

Is Cagliari's old town hilly?

Yes. The Castello district sits on a hill above the harbour, with steep streets and stairs. Free public lifts link it with the lower town, and once you are at the top our hunt works its way downhill.

How far is the city centre from the cruise port?

The port entrance is about 0.8 km from the central streets around Via Roma and Piazza Matteotti.

Can I do the scavenger hunt on a Cagliari port day?

Yes. It takes about 3 hours over 3 km, starts at the top of the hill and finishes at Piazza Matteotti by the shuttle point, so it fits well into a normal port day.

Do I need to book a time slot?

No. You book online, receive your booking reference by email straight away and start whenever you are ashore. The ticket has no time limit, so it still works if your ship arrives late or your plans change.

What do we need on the day?

A charged smartphone with mobile data, the World City Trail app from the App Store or Google Play, and your booking reference. A power bank helps on a long port day.
