Cork on a cruise stop: from Cobh to Cork city by train

Yes, you can see Cork on your own, with a little planning. Ships dock at Cobh, about 20 km from the city. Cobh station is directly opposite the cruise terminal, the train to Cork Kent Station takes about 25 minutes, and from there St Patrick's Street is a 10-minute walk. That leaves 3-4 hours for the English Market and Shandon on a normal port day. Short on time? Cobh itself is right at the ship. Our city guides help you plan the day.

From Cobh cruise terminal to Cork city

  1. Most ships berth at the Cobh Cruise Terminal, next to the Cobh Heritage Centre. Cobh railway station is directly opposite the terminal, so you can walk straight from the gangway to the platform.
  2. Take the Irish Rail train on the Cork-Cobh line to Cork Kent Station, about 25 minutes. Trains normally run hourly, with extra trains about every half hour on big cruise days. Both Cobh and Kent stations are wheelchair-accessible.
  3. From Kent Station on Lower Glanmire Road, walk about 10 minutes across the river to St Patrick's Street, or take Bus Éireann route 205 via Parnell Place to the St Patrick's Street stop, about 8 minutes. A taxi from Cobh to Cork takes about 25-30 minutes.
  4. Short on time? Stay in Cobh. The waterfront promenade is about 3 minutes from the ship, the Heritage Centre and the Titanic Experience are steps away, and St Colman's Cathedral is up a steep climb.
  5. If your ship docks at Ringaskiddy, across the harbour, cruise lines usually run shuttle buses (about 20 minutes). Independently: taxi to Passage West, the cross-river foot ferry, then a flat 10-minute walk to Carrigaloe station for the train.

  4. 2:00Walk up to St Anne's Church in Shandon to see the Shandon Bells.
  5. 3:00Back to Kent Station. Choose a train that brings you to Cobh at least 1.5 hours before all-aboard time, never the last one.
  6. 4:00Back in Cobh with time to spare: a short look at the promenade or the Heritage Centre beside the terminal before boarding.

Tips for Cork when time is short

  • Trains get busy on cruise days. Leave a margin and do not plan on the last train before all-aboard.
  • Sunday train service is reduced: check the timetable for the return trip before you leave Cobh.
  • There is a tourist information point in the old Victorian station building at the cruise berth, and the Cobh tourist office is in the Market House on Casement Square.
  • Cobh is very walkable from the ship, but the town climbs a steep hill: St Colman's Cathedral is reached by steps or a steep side road.
  • If your ship is at Ringaskiddy, there is nothing to see at the berth. Use the cruise line's shuttle, or the taxi, foot ferry and train route via Carrigaloe.
  • Open the city guides on board while you have Wi-Fi: they work offline, so on the train and in town you have a tip for each place without mobile data.

Why take our city guides ashore

  • They work offline, so you don’t need mobile data or roaming in port.
  • Six guides in one: where to eat, what to see, what to do with kids, going out, day trips and saving money.
  • A short list of places worth your limited time, with a tip for each one.
  • Buy before you sail and open them on your phone as soon as you step ashore.
