Yes, Monaco's old town is one of the easiest port-day games. Ships that get the berth dock at the cruise pier on the Rainier III breakwater in Port Hercule, right below the Rock; others tender into the harbour. Walk to Place d'Armes and climb the Rampe Major (about 15 minutes uphill) to the Prince's Palace, where our hunt starts, or use the public lifts or bus 1 or 2. The 2-hour hunt stays on the Rock, so even a half-day call works.

- Leave the cruise terminal at the foot of the Rock (if your ship tenders, you land in Port Hercule) and walk along the harbour to Place d'Armes.
- Climb the Rampe Major, a stepped brick ramp, to Place du Palais in front of the Prince's Palace: about 15 minutes of steady uphill walking, much of it in full sun.
- For less effort, follow the breakwater walkway around the cliff to the Parking des Pêcheurs below the Musée Océanographique, take the public lifts up to the top of the Rock and cross the old town to the Palace: about 25-30 minutes including the lifts.
- Or take city bus line 1 or 2 from the harbour side up to Monaco-Ville, where both lines end (about 10-15 minutes), then walk a few minutes to the Palace square.
A Monaco port day, hour by hour
- 0:00Off the ship (or the tender) and along the harbour to Place d'Armes.
- 0:30Up the Rampe Major or by lift, then start the hunt at the Prince's Palace.
- 0:50The Old Monaco Museum, Monaco Cathedral and the Town Hall in the lanes of the old town.
- 1:30The Jardins de Saint-Martin and the Musée Océanographique.
- 2:30The Chapelle de la Visitation and the Chapelle de la Miséricorde, then the finish in the old town.
- 3:15Down to the harbour and back on board, or in the tender queue, well before all-aboard time.
Tips for Monaco when time is short
- The Rampe Major is steep and in full sun for much of the day; the public lifts near the Musée Océanographique are the low-effort way up.
- If your ship tenders, allow extra time for tender queues both ways, especially in the late afternoon, and keep well over an hour in hand before all-aboard time.
- With several cruise calls and day-tour coaches, the Palace square is busiest in the late morning; starting early or after lunch is calmer.
- The streets on the Rock are pedestrian and partly cobbled, but flat once you are up top.
- The hunt is short, so you may have time left: the Bateau Bus water shuttle crosses Port Hercule to the Monte Carlo side if you want to see the casino district afterwards.
- You need no entry tickets for the game, because every stop is seen from outside, in the squares and lanes of the old town.
Why a self-guided game works on a port day
- You start when you step off the ship, not at a fixed tour time, and nobody waits for a group.
- Everyone in your party can follow on their own phone with one booking reference.
- You can stop for lunch or a swim and carry on later, and end the game whenever you need to head back.
- Google Maps guides you from stop to stop, and the game needs no entry tickets.
Monaco cruise stop: questions
Can I walk from the Monaco cruise terminal to the Prince's Palace?
Yes. It is a short but uphill walk: along the harbour to Place d'Armes and up the Rampe Major (about 15 minutes of climbing), or via the public lifts below the Musée Océanographique.
Do cruise ships dock or tender in Monaco?
Ships that get the cruise pier on the Rainier III breakwater dock directly in Port Hercule. When the berth is taken or the ship is too large, passengers are tendered into the harbour.
Is there public transport up to Monaco-Ville?
Yes. Monaco city bus lines 1 and 2 end at Monaco-Ville on the Rock, and free public lifts and escalators link the city's levels.
How much time do I need for the Monaco scavenger hunt?
About 2 hours, with only about 24 minutes of actual walking over 2 km, all on the Rock. Add the climb up, the way back down and any tender time, and it still fits a half-day call.
Do I need to book a time slot?
No. You book online, receive your booking reference by email straight away and start whenever you are ashore. The ticket has no time limit, so it still works if your ship arrives late or your plans change.
What do we need on the day?
A charged smartphone with mobile data, the World City Trail app from the App Store or Google Play, and your booking reference. A power bank helps on a long port day.
