Regensburg on a river cruise: a self-guided city game from the Danube

Yes, if you head straight for the start. River-cruise ships moor at the Donaulände on the Old Town bank of the Danube, between the Eiserne Brücke and the Nibelungenbrücke. Our scavenger hunt starts at the Kepler Monument in front of the main station, about 20-25 minutes' walk or 10 minutes by taxi. The hunt takes about 3 hours over about 3.6 km and ends at Bismarckplatz, so it fits a full day or a long half-day.

From the Donaulände to the Kepler Monument

  1. Leave the ship at the Donaulände along the Marc-Aurel-Ufer, just downstream of the Museum of Bavarian History. Ships are sometimes moored side by side, so you may have to cross another ship to reach the shore.
  2. The berths are on the Old Town side of the river, so there is no bridge to cross. Walk south-west through the Old Town to the small park in front of the main railway station (Hauptbahnhof), where the Kepler Monument stands: about 20-25 minutes.
  3. Prefer to ride? City buses serve the Hauptbahnhof from the edge of the Old Town in about 10 minutes, and a taxi to the station also takes about 10 minutes; the monument is in the park directly in front of it.
  4. Open the app at the Kepler Monument and start the hunt. It then works north through the Old Town to the Stone Bridge and ends at Bismarckplatz on the western side.

Tips for Regensburg when time is short

  • The cathedral, the Porta Praetoria and the Stone Bridge are within about a 15-20 minute walk even from the farthest berths, so you are never far from the ship.
  • The Old Town is compact and flat; from Bismarckplatz at the end, simply walk back east along the river to the berths.
  • Ask which berth you are at and whether your ship is rafted to another before you leave, and allow time to cross it on the way back.
  • Shops are closed on Sundays, so plan any shopping for a weekday call.
  • You can change the order of the stops in the app, so if time gets tight you can head for the stops nearest the river first.
  • No entry tickets are needed: the cathedral, the basilica and the other stops are seen from outside or from public squares.

Why a self-guided game works on a port day

  • You start when you step off the ship, not at a fixed tour time, and nobody waits for a group.
  • Everyone in your party can follow on their own phone with one booking reference.
  • You can stop for lunch or a swim and carry on later, and end the game whenever you need to head back.
  • Google Maps guides you from stop to stop, and the game needs no entry tickets.

Regensburg river-cruise stop: questions

Where do river cruise ships dock in Regensburg?

On the south (Old Town) bank of the Danube at the Donaulände, between the Eiserne Brücke and the Nibelungenbrücke, just downstream from the Museum of Bavarian History.

Is the Old Town walkable from the ship?

Yes. The cathedral, the Porta Praetoria and the Stone Bridge are within about a 15-20 minute walk even from the farthest berths, and there is no bridge to cross.

Where is the Kepler Monument?

In the small park in front of Regensburg's main railway station, at the southern edge of the Old Town.

Can I do Regensburg in one day on a river cruise?

Yes. With about 20-25 minutes to the start and a 3-hour route that ends a short walk from the river, the hunt fits a full day or a long half-day.

Do I need to book a time slot?

No. You book online, receive your booking reference by email straight away and start whenever you are ashore. The ticket has no time limit, so it still works if your ship arrives late or your plans change.

What do we need on the day?

A charged smartphone with mobile data, the World City Trail app from the App Store or Google Play, and your booking reference. A power bank helps on a long port day.
