Stavanger on a cruise stop: from the quay to Old Stavanger

Yes, Stavanger is one of the easiest ports to explore on your own. Most ships berth at Strandkaien or one of the other city quays on Vågen harbour, and Gamle Stavanger, the cathedral and the shopping streets are about 5 minutes away on foot. If your ship uses Mekjarvik instead, a shuttle bus gets you into town in about 20 minutes. Three to four hours on foot are plenty, and our city guides help you plan the day.

From the cruise port to Old Stavanger

  1. Most ships tie up at one of the four city-centre cruise berths: Strandkaien, Skagenkaien, Skansekaien or Konserthuskaien. They all line Vågen harbour, so when you walk down the gangway you are already in town.
  2. Follow the harbour front. Gamle Stavanger (Old Stavanger) climbs up from the west side of the harbour, and Stavanger Cathedral stands at its head; both are about 5 minutes on foot from the ship.
  3. On busy days some ships dock at Mekjarvik, about 10 km north-west of the centre. The cruise line then runs a shuttle bus into Stavanger and back; the ride takes about 20 minutes. Taxis also wait near the piers if you prefer.

Tips for Stavanger when time is short

  • Ships usually dock right in the centre, so there is no transfer: you can be in the old town minutes after leaving the ship.
  • Gamle Stavanger has cobbled, slightly hilly lanes, and Valbergtårnet is a short uphill walk with steps. Wear shoes with good grip.
  • The weather changes quickly here. Bring a light waterproof layer, even in summer.
  • Check your ship's daily programme for the berth: on some days ships use Mekjarvik, about 10 km out of town, and you depend on the shuttle bus.
  • Pulpit Rock (Preikestolen) is a demanding hike of about 4 hours round trip, plus the transfer. Only try it on a long port day and keep a generous buffer before all-aboard.
  • Open the city guides on board while you still have Wi-Fi: they work offline, so you can find the next sight or a lunch spot ashore without mobile data.

Why take our city guides ashore

  • They work offline, so you don’t need mobile data or roaming in port.
  • All our guides for the city in one place, from where to eat to what to see.
  • A short list of places worth your limited time, with a tip for each one.
  • Buy before you sail and open them on your phone as soon as you step ashore.

Stavanger cruise stop: questions

Can I walk from the cruise ship to the old town in Stavanger?

Yes. Ships at Strandkaien and the other city quays berth on Vågen harbour, right next to Gamle Stavanger and the cathedral. It is a few minutes on foot.

What if my ship docks at Mekjarvik?

Mekjarvik is about 10 km north-west of the centre. Your cruise line runs a shuttle bus into Stavanger and back, a ride of about 20 minutes. Allow extra time for the return.

Can I do Pulpit Rock (Preikestolen) on a port day?

Only on a long port day. The hike alone takes about 4 hours round trip, and you need the transfer from Stavanger on top of that.

How much time do I need for Stavanger?

Three to four hours on foot cover Gamle Stavanger, the cathedral and the harbour comfortably, because the ship berths next to the old town.

Do the city guides work without mobile data?

Yes. Once opened on your phone they also work offline, which helps in ports where roaming is expensive.

Can I buy just one guide?

Yes. You can choose a single guide, such as the food guide, or all guides for the city.
