Yes, Tromsø is easy to do on your own. Smaller ships berth at Prostneset, right in the city centre, a 5-10 minute walk from Storgata and Stortorget. Larger ships use Breivika, about 4 km north, where city bus 42, a cruise shuttle or a taxi gets you into the centre in about 15 minutes. Then see Tromsø Cathedral, the Polar Museum and the Arctic Cathedral across the bridge. Our city guides help you plan the day.
From the cruise port to Tromsø city centre
- Check your berth first. Small and mid-size ships dock at Prostneset (quay 8) in the city centre; from there you walk straight into Storgata, Stortorget square and the harbour promenade in about 5-10 minutes.
- Larger ships dock at Breivika (quay 21), in a port area about 4 km north of the centre. Use the underpass to the stop across Stakkevollvegen and take city bus 42 towards Eidkjosen to the centre, for example Stortorget, about 10-15 minutes. Back, take bus 42 towards Stakkevollan to the Breivika stop.
- Buses take no cash: pay with the Svipper app, at a ticket machine or by bank card on board. Some cruise lines also run a shuttle from Breivika (about 15-20 minutes, drop-off points vary), and taxis wait at both docks (about 10-15 minutes from Breivika).

Tips for Tromsø when time is short
- Check which quay your ship uses: Prostneset is in the centre, while Breivika is about 4 km out and needs a bus, shuttle or taxi.
- City buses do not take cash. Have the Svipper app ready, or use a ticket machine or a bank card on board.
- The Arctic Cathedral and the cable car are on the mainland side across Tromsø Bridge. Allow extra time for this, and for the return to Breivika.
- Weather changes quickly even in summer: bring a warm, windproof layer, especially if you go up to Storsteinen.
- Breivika lies across the main road from the Tromsø Arctic-Alpine Botanic Garden, if you want something close to the ship.
- Load the city guides before going ashore: they work offline, so you have a tip for each place even without mobile data.
Why take our city guides ashore
- They work offline, so you don’t need mobile data or roaming in port.

- A short list of places worth your limited time, with a tip for each one.
- Buy before you sail and open them on your phone as soon as you step ashore.
