The route: from the 1914 Memorial to the Cultural Centre

The Dinant scavenger hunt starts at the memorial to the victims of 23 August 1914 and visits the statue of Charles de Gaulle before crossing the Meuse on the Charles de Gaulle Bridge to the Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame. You continue to the Adolphe Sax monument, the Saxophone Monument, Adolphe Sax’s house and the saxophone water clock, then the lion and the Triumph of Light monument, finishing at the Regional Cultural Centre.

The route is about 1.8 km, roughly 25 minutes of walking. You can start anywhere or change the order in the app, with Google Maps guiding you. No entry tickets are needed: every riddle uses the outside of the buildings.

Why explore Dinant with a city game

Dinant is squeezed between the Meuse and a steep limestone cliff, with the citadel on top and the bulb-shaped bell tower of the Collegiate Church below. Adolphe Sax, inventor of the saxophone, was born here in 1814, and giant colourful saxophones line the bridge named after Charles de Gaulle, who was wounded in Dinant as a young officer in 1914.

A game turns this small town into a chain of discoveries. Each riddle makes you look closely at statues, façades and inscriptions, and the stories explain what you just saw. Everyone plays on their own phone, with no schedule.

  • Start in the morning or late afternoon; the riverside gets busy on summer weekends.
  • Start the escape game in daylight; its puzzles rely on details on monuments and façades.
  • Bring a charged phone, a power bank and comfortable shoes.
  • Combine the game with a visit to the citadel or a boat trip on the Meuse, and try a couque de Dinant, the town’s hard honey biscuit.
