Why explore Lyon with a city game
Lyon’s historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, spreads between the Rhône and the Saône. Vieux Lyon is one of Europe’s largest Renaissance quarters, with hidden passageways called traboules, while Place Bellecour, with its statue of Louis XIV, opens onto the Presqu’île. The Fresque des Lyonnais is a giant trompe-l’œil mural of famous locals.
A game makes you look closely at courtyards, carvings and painted details you would otherwise walk past, and the stories that follow explain what you have just seen. Everyone plays on their own phone, there is no schedule, and you can stop in a bouchon whenever you like.
- Start in the morning or late afternoon: Vieux Lyon’s narrow lanes are busiest around lunchtime.
- Start the escape game in daylight; its puzzles rely on details on the outside of the buildings.
- Bring a charged phone, a power bank and comfortable shoes for the cobbles of Vieux Lyon.
- End with lunch in a traditional bouchon, or take the funicular up to Fourvière for the view.
