The Honolulu scavenger hunt starts at the Cathedral of St Andrew and continues to Capitol Modern, the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum, and the Hawaii State Capitol. Next come ʻIolani Palace, Honolulu Hale (City Hall) and Kawaiahaʻo Church, then the King Kamehameha Statue in front of Aliʻiolani Hale and the Hula Dancer Statue, before you finish at the Aloha Tower on the harbour.
The 10 stops cover about 2.7 km, roughly 37 minutes of walking. You can start anywhere or change the order in the app, with Google Maps guiding you. No entry tickets are needed: every riddle uses the outside of the buildings.
Most visitors see Waikīkī, but downtown Honolulu is where Hawaii’s history was made. Hawaii was an independent kingdom until 1893, and its capital district still shows it: ʻIolani Palace, home of King Kalākaua and Queen Liliʻuokalani, is the only royal palace in the United States, Kawaiahaʻo Church was built from coral blocks, and the gilded King Kamehameha Statue is draped in long lei every June.
A game makes you look closely at plaques, carvings and details you would otherwise pass by, and the stories explain what you just saw. Everyone plays on their own phone, with no schedule and time for a shave ice whenever you like.
