See the guide in action

A short look at a real guide: ticking places off, filtering and opening Maps.

The Assisi City Guides answer the questions every pilgrim and art lover arrives with: when to see Giotto’s basilica without the tour groups, where black truffle pasta is the real thing and not truffle oil, how to walk up to the hermitage on Monte Subasio and which hill towns along the Umbrian valley deserve a train ride. Each guide is a short, honest list that tells you why a place earns its spot, what to order or look for and one practical tip, and it opens in your browser as soon as you have paid.

Three places from the guides

Ristorante La Stalla

Via Eremo delle Carceri, 1.5 km above Porta Cappuccini

Lunch here means shared wooden tables under beams blackened by smoke, in what used to be a stable. Lamb, sausage and chicken come straight off a big open fire, potatoes bake in the embers, and a full meal with wine stays around €25 a head. From the food guide.

Oratorio dei Pellegrini

Via San Francesco, halfway to the basilica

Push the glass door of this little chapel from 1457, once used by pilgrims sleeping in the hospice next door, and every surface is painted with frescoes by Pierantonio Mezzastris. It takes five minutes and costs nothing. From the things to do guide.

Museo di San Francesco, Montefalco

Montefalco, train to Foligno then bus, about 1 h

In 1452 Benozzo Gozzoli covered the apse of this former church with the life of St Francis. Come after Assisi’s basilica: the same story, told with more countryside and everyday town life. Entry is about €7. From the hill towns and day trips guide.

Plan your days in Assisi

Day one: reach the Basilica of San Francesco early, before the coaches, then follow Via San Francesco past the Oratorio dei Pellegrini to Piazza del Comune, the Temple of Minerva and the Roman forum beneath it. Grab torta al testo for lunch, climb to the Rocca Maggiore for the view in the afternoon and book a trattoria for dinner. Day two: walk up through the woods to the Eremo delle Carceri, stop for grilled lamb at La Stalla on the way down and end the day at San Damiano among the olive trees. For a rainy or slow day, take the train to Perugia for the National Gallery, or stay in town for the Pinacoteca and the Museo della Memoria, with a slice of rocciata at Bar Sensi in between.
