A scavenger hunt through Bonn, from Beethoven's birthplace to the electors' palace
The Bonn scavenger hunt is a self-guided city game you play on your phone: you walk from landmark to landmark, solve a riddle at each one by looking closely at what is in front of you, and unlock the stories and legends behind it. From the station to the palace gate you walk around 30 minutes on level ground, 2.5 km with 10 stops, and the game as a whole takes roughly 2 hours of Beethoven, prince-electors and capital-city stories.
Highlights include the Romanesque Bonn Minster, the Beethoven Monument on Münsterplatz, the Beethoven House where the composer was born, the Old Town Hall where state guests greeted the crowds, and the Electoral Palace that now houses the university. Bonn's centre is flat and compact, so the route links Beethoven, the prince-electors and the years as West Germany's capital in one easy walk.

Riddles between the Minster, the Bonngasse and the Hofgarten
Two stone heads and a bronze composer
Every stop hides one riddle in plain view: the two giant stone heads of the martyrs lying beside the Minster, the bronze Beethoven on Münsterplatz, the double staircase of the Old Town Hall. You crack them by looking hard and reasoning, and nobody expects you to read music.
Cloaks, kings and a capital
With each answer comes a story: St Martin cutting his cloak in two for a freezing beggar, Franz Liszt helping to pay for the Beethoven Monument and Queen Victoria attending its unveiling in 1845, and Charles de Gaulle and John F. Kennedy greeting the crowds from the Old Town Hall steps while Bonn was the West German capital. Should you prefer to keep your eyes on the old town hall's stairs, the audio narration reads every story out.
2.5 flat kilometres
Bonn's centre has no real hills, and the 30 minutes of walking take you from the railway station through the old town to the long front of the Electoral Palace. Google Maps leads from stop to stop, so you never need to unfold a street plan.
A break on the Hofgarten lawn
Nothing in the game is timed. Stretch out on the Hofgarten lawn behind the palace with the students, find a café on the market square, and carry on with the next riddle an hour later or the following morning.

Who will like Bonn's riddle trail
Beethoven admirers
Three stops revolve around the composer: the monument on Münsterplatz, the house on Bonngasse where he was born in December 1770 and the palace where he worked as a young court musician. The riddles make you look at them more closely than a quick photo would.
Day-trippers arriving by train
The first riddle waits right outside Bonn Hauptbahnhof, so you can step off a train from Cologne, open the app and start playing at once. About 2 hours later you finish by the palace, with the afternoon still ahead.
Groups of colleagues and classmates
Up to 5 people form a team, each one with the game running on their own phone, and several teams can leave the station a few minutes apart to compare answers by the Koblenzer Tor. The flat streets keep every team at a similar pace.
