Braga is small, old and full of churches, and the Braga City Guides cut it down to what deserves your time: which tasca serves the francesinha locals argue about, when to reach Bom Jesus before the coaches from Porto, where the students drink on Rua Dom Paio Mendes and which bus takes you to the Gerês waterfalls and back. Each place comes with a reason to go, what to order or look at and one practical tip, and the guide opens in your browser as soon as you have paid.

Three picks from the guides
Tasquinha Dom Ferreira
Rua de São Vicente 35, five minutes north of Praça da República
Home cooking in a plain dining room: tripe soup, sarrabulho, a francesinha and a dish of the day at €9 to €12. By half past twelve the tables are full of locals, and in the evening a queue forms before the door opens. From the food guide.
Bom Jesus Funicular
Foot of the Bom Jesus stairway
Running since 1882, it is the oldest funicular in the world still moved by water: the upper car takes on water until its weight hauls the lower one up. The ride lasts three minutes and costs about €2 one way, and kids can watch the tank empty at the bottom. From the family guide.
LETRARIA
Rua Dom Gonçalo Pereira 35, the second bar street
The taproom of Letra, a craft brewery from nearby Vila Verde, pouring around a dozen of its own beers from about €3 a glass. On a summer night the big garden behind the bar is the best place in the centre to drink outdoors. From the nightlife guide.
From the game to the guide
World City Trail’s Braga scavenger hunt, outdoor escape game and audio tour lead you through the historic centre. Once the game is over, the guides carry on: a prato do dia in a family tasca, a glass of vinho verde on Rua Dom Paio Mendes, the funicular up to Bom Jesus or a bus to Guimarães the next day.
