Brisbane Team-Building & Escape Game Adventure: riddles, river views and city history, all on your own phone.
You start beside the Wheel of Brisbane, sixty metres of steel and glass that first turned in 2008 and never left, then pose at the colourful Brisbane Sign in South Bank Parklands. Across the water waits the sandstone abutment of the old Victoria Bridge, whose 1874 original was wrecked by the great flood of 1893, and then Brisbane City Hall, opened in 1930 with a 92 metre clock tower locals call Big Ben.
Next comes Anzac Square, laid out between 1928 and 1930, where a Greek style sandstone colonnade shelters an eternal flame that has burned since the square opened. At St John’s Cathedral you stand before one of the last cathedrals built entirely in stone without steel: begun in 1906, finished only in 2009. Beside St Stephen’s Cathedral hides St Stephen’s Chapel of 1850, Brisbane’s oldest surviving church.
Queens Gardens was set aside as the city’s botanic reserve in 1855, and its old fig trees have had more than a century and a half to spread. Then Queensland Parliament, French Renaissance in golden local sandstone, built in stages from 1865 to 1889. You finish in the City Botanical Gardens, dug by convicts in 1828 and shaped into a collection from 1855.
No booking desk, no guide to meet, no fixed start time. Buy once, start when you like, pause for coffee and pick the trail up again. Solve every riddle and Brisbane will feel a lot more familiar by the time you reach the river.
