See the guide in action

A short look at a real guide: ticking places off, filtering and opening Maps.

The Delphi City Guides answer the questions every visit here raises: how to have the sanctuary almost to yourself before the day trippers from Athens pour in, where to eat away from the set menus on the main street, what Arachova cooks up in the mountains and how to reach the sea at Galaxidi or the mosaics of Hosios Loukas without booking a tour. Each guide is a short, honest list that says why a place earns your time, what to order or look for and one practical tip, and it opens in your browser the moment you have paid.

The three Delphi guides

Food guide

23 places

Family tavernas with terraces over the olive valley in Delphi, slow-cooked goat, wild boar and grilled formaela cheese in Arachova, fish on the quay in Galaxidi, plus bakeries, sweets and coffee in all three.

Things to do guide

17 places

Apollo’s sanctuary with its stadium, the Tholos and the museums, Arachova’s clock tower and the slopes of Mount Parnassus, then Galaxidi’s captains’ houses and the Byzantine monastery of Hosios Loukas.

Day trips guide

16 places

The spring and the upper street of Delphi, Arachova, the Corycian Cave and the ski area, a swim at Itea and lunch in Galaxidi, then longer runs to Hosios Loukas, the Lion of Chaeronea and Nafpaktos.

Three places from the guides

O Bebelis

Galaxidi, Nikolaou Mama 20-22, a street behind the harbour

Step back from the seafront and the owner will walk you through the dishes himself. Ask for the stuffed onions, a Galaxidi recipe you will hardly find anywhere else, with vine leaves and pork leg alongside; mains run about €11 to €16 and a little dessert often arrives unasked. From the food guide.

Ancient Stadium of Delphi

Delphi, highest point of the sanctuary, 15 to 20 min uphill from the gate

The runners of the Pythian Games raced here, and the stone benches and starting line are still in place among the pines. It is the best-kept ancient stadium in Greece, yet most visitors turn back at the theatre, so you may find it nearly empty. From the things to do guide.

Holy Monastery of Hosios Loukas

Near Distomo, 45 min drive east of Delphi

An 11th-century monastery on the UNESCO list, standing alone among olive groves, with gold-ground Byzantine mosaics that rank with the finest anywhere. Plan on about an hour and a ticket of roughly €6 to €8. From the day trips guide.

Plan your days in Delphi

Day one: walk into the sanctuary at 8:30 while it is still cool, climb all the way up to the stadium, then cool off in the museum before strolling east past the Castalian Spring to the Tholos of Athena Pronaia, and end with a booked table on a terrace in the village at sunset. Day two: drive down through the olive plain to Galaxidi, follow the quay round to the pine headland for a swim off the rocks, look in at the Maritime Museum and stay for a fish lunch by the water. For a rainy or slow day, see the gold mosaics of Hosios Loukas, climb to Arachova’s clock tower, browse the small folklore museum and settle into a long mountain lunch of slow-cooked meat and formaela.
