Düsseldorf as a riddle trail, from the Kö canal to the Rhine steps

The Düsseldorf scavenger hunt is a self-guided city game you play on your phone: you walk from landmark to landmark, solve a riddle at each one by looking closely at what is in front of you, and unlock the stories and legends behind it. The 10 stops sit close together between the Königsallee and the river, so the walking adds up to just 24 minutes and 2 km, and the rest of the roughly 2 hours belongs to riddles, legends and whatever pauses you choose.

Highlights include the Triton Fountain on the Königsallee, St Andrew's Church with the tomb of Jan Wellem, the twisted spire of St Lambertus, the bronze City Elevation Monument, the Jan Wellem statue on Marktplatz and the Rhine Promenade. The old town, nicknamed the longest bar in the world, is compact and car-free, so everything is close together on foot.

What you crack between Martin-Luther-Platz and the Rhine

A sea god, a crooked spire and a crowded bronze

Every stop hides one riddle in plain sight: Triton rising from his rocks at the end of the Kö canal, the twisted spire of St Lambertus, the packed figures of Bert Gerresheim's City Elevation Monument. Careful looking answers each one, and no local knowledge is assumed.

Horse dung, silver spoons and a battle in 1288

Solved riddles release Düsseldorf's tales: how the Königsallee is said to have got its name after a Prussian king was pelted with horse dung in 1848, why citizens supposedly threw their silver spoons into the casting of Jan Wellem's statue, and how victory at Worringen brought the town its charter in 1288. When your eyes are already hunting for the next clue, switch to the audio narration and listen instead.

Two short kilometres, all on the flat

From the shopping boulevard to the river, Google Maps steers you through barely 24 minutes of walking. The old town is car-free and compact, so the longest stretch between two riddles is little more than a few street corners.

An Altbier break whenever it suits

The game never hurries you: stop for a glass of Altbier in the old town's brewery pubs or a coffee on Burgplatz, and the next riddle waits on your phone. Finish the same evening or come back to it another day.

Who gets the most out of Düsseldorf's riddles

Trade-fair guests with a free afternoon

Many people are in Düsseldorf for business and have only a few hours to spare. The game ties the Kö, the old town and the river into one compact loop, so you see the essentials before dinner.

Children who like cartwheels and sea gods

A fountain of cartwheeling boys on Burgplatz, a bronze Triton and a church spire that twists are easy to love for young players. Pair each team of children with a grown-up who plays along.

Colleagues who finish on the river steps

Teams of up to 5, each player with the game on their own phone, can set off from Martin-Luther-Platz minutes apart. The wide steps of the Rhine Promenade make a natural finish line where everyone sits down together.

Good to know

  • Bring a charged smartphone with mobile data; a power bank helps.
  • No entry tickets needed: everything happens outside the buildings. Going inside is optional and paid separately.
  • Family friendly; children must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Not suitable for wheelchair users and difficult with strollers.
  • Teams of up to 5 work best; bigger groups split into several teams, one ticket per player.
  • Every purchase helps support stray cats and dogs in Greece.

The route: Martin-Luther-Platz, the Kö, the art quarter, St Lambertus, Burgplatz, Marktplatz and the Rhine

10 stops · about 24 min walking · start: Martin-Luther-Platz · finish: Rhine Promenade

The hunt starts on Martin-Luther-Platz near the Königsallee and passes the Triton Fountain before heading into the old town to the Kunsthalle and St Andrew's Church. From the Basilica of St Lambertus you continue to the City Elevation Monument and Burgplatz with its Castle Tower, then to Marktplatz and the Old Town Hall, and finish on the Rhine Promenade. The Kunsthalle and the churches are only read from the outside, so the game asks for no entry ticket anywhere, and if your hotel is down by the river, the app can open the hunt at Burgplatz and put the remaining stops in a new order.

  1. Martin-Luther-Platz

    1Martin-Luther-PlatzStart

Martin-Luther-Platz lies just off the Königsallee and is framed by the Johanneskirche, Düsseldorf's main Protestant church, built in the late 19th century. Its tall tower is a landmark of the city centre. The square is named after the reformer Martin Luther.

  2. Triton Fountain (Tritonenbrunnen)

    2Triton Fountain (Tritonenbrunnen)

At the northern end of the Königsallee canal, the sea god Triton rises from a rocky fountain made at the beginning of the 20th century. The canal follows the old city moat. A popular story says the street was renamed Königsallee in 1851 to make amends to the Prussian king, who had been pelted with horse dung here in 1848.

  3. Kunsthalle Düsseldorf

    3Kunsthalle Düsseldorf

The Kunsthalle on Grabbeplatz is an exhibition hall for contemporary art with no collection of its own, so its shows change constantly. Its rough concrete building from 1967 is a well-known example of Brutalist architecture. Düsseldorf's strong art scene owes much to its Art Academy, where Joseph Beuys taught.

  4. St Andrew's Church (St. Andreas)

    4St Andrew's Church (St. Andreas)

St Andrew's was built between 1622 and 1629 as the court church of Count Palatine Wolfgang Wilhelm and was later run by the Jesuits. Its mausoleum holds the tomb of Elector Johann Wilhelm, whom locals call Jan Wellem. Behind the plain exterior lies a richly stuccoed baroque interior.

  5. St Lambertus Basilica

    5St Lambertus Basilica

St Lambertus is a Gothic brick church from the 14th century and one of the oldest buildings in the old town. It holds the Renaissance tomb of Duke William the Rich of Jülich-Cleves-Berg. Look up at its twisted spire, for which local legends offer playful explanations.

  6. City Elevation Monument (Stadterhebungsmonument)

    6City Elevation Monument (Stadterhebungsmonument)

Bert Gerresheim's bronze monument was unveiled in 1988 for the 700th anniversary of Düsseldorf's town rights. Count Adolf V of Berg granted them in 1288, after his victory in the Battle of Worringen. Look closely at the crowded figures, which tell the story of the battle and the signing of the charter.

  7. Burgplatz

    7Burgplatz

Burgplatz, on the bank of the Rhine, was once the site of the palace of the dukes of Berg, which burned down in 1872. Only the round Castle Tower survives and now houses a shipping museum. The square's fountain shows Düsseldorf's famous cartwheelers, boys whose tradition legend links to the Battle of Worringen.

  8. Marktplatz

    8Marktplatz

The market square in front of the Old Town Hall is dominated by the equestrian statue of Elector Johann Wilhelm, known as Jan Wellem, cast by Gabriel de Grupello and erected in 1711. Legend says that when the bronze ran short during casting, citizens threw in their silver spoons.

  9. Old Town Hall

    9Old Town Hall

Düsseldorf's Old Town Hall was built between 1570 and 1573 in Renaissance style on the market square. It is still used by the city's mayor and council today.

  10. Rhine Promenade

    10Rhine PromenadeFinish

Since 1993, road traffic has run through a tunnel beneath the Rhine bank, and the promenade above links the old town with the Media Harbour. Wide steps lead down to the river and invite you to sit and watch the ships. In the distance you can see the 240-metre Rheinturm telecommunications tower.

Fantastic way to see the city which is largely pedestrianised in the older part. We did with kids aged 10, 8 and 7 and they could take part too. Took around 2 hours with an ice cream stop. Highly recommended.

We did this tour after already spending two days in D?sseldorf, but it still lead us to some new places. Was fun, not too difficult, would definitely recommend if you want to see and know some extra about the city. Would buy 1 instead of for 2 persons as login is exactly the same.

Frequently asked questions

Can we fit the Düsseldorf game between a busy day and dinner in the Altstadt?

Comfortably: the whole game runs about 2 hours, and the walking between its 10 stops adds up to only 24 minutes over 2 km. Start in the late afternoon and you reach the Rhine steps in time for the evening on the river.

From which square does the Düsseldorf hunt set off, and where on the Rhine does it stop?

Riddle one waits on Martin-Luther-Platz, beside the tall tower of the Johanneskirche just off the Königsallee, and the last riddle is on the Rhine Promenade at the edge of the old town. Coming from the old town? Set Burgplatz or Marktplatz as your first stop in the app instead.

Who decides when our Düsseldorf game begins?

You do, because there is no guide and no booked slot. After you book, the reference arrives by email, and whenever the group is ready you type it into the World City Trail app; each player then has the riddles on their own phone, one ticket each.

Would the Kunsthalle or the Castle Tower charge us anything during the game?

No ticket is involved in the riddles themselves, since every answer is on a façade, a statue or a square. If you want to see the changing exhibitions in the Kunsthalle or the shipping museum inside the Castle Tower, those visits have their own tickets and fit in before or after.

Which corners of Düsseldorf will children remember?

The cartwheeling boys on the Burgplatz fountain, the legend of the silver spoons on Marktplatz and Triton in the Kö canal tend to grab them, with an adult in every team. The ground is flat, but the old town's cobbles make a pushchair bumpy, and the route does not suit wheelchairs.

Can a German speaker and an English speaker play the Düsseldorf route side by side?

Yes, as every phone runs its own language. Düsseldorf's riddles exist in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Dutch, so a mixed group of colleagues or relatives can solve the same stops together while each reads in their own language.

How would a team event on the Düsseldorf route work?

Everyone books a ticket, you form teams of up to five, and the teams leave Martin-Luther-Platz a few minutes apart. Arrange to meet on the Rhine Promenade at the end, where the brewery pubs of the old town are only a few steps away.

What belongs in the bag for a game in Düsseldorf's old town?

A charged phone with mobile data for each team, a power bank and a rain jacket, since the Rhineland weather can turn quickly. Earphones help you follow the narration in the busy lanes around Bolkerstraße on a Saturday.

The game opens below the tower of the Johanneskirche

Book a ticket for each player online and the reference is in your inbox moments later. Pick the day, walk to Martin-Luther-Platz near the Königsallee and let the tower of the Johanneskirche mark the start of your game.
