See the guide in action

A short look at a real guide: ticking places off, filtering and opening Maps.

The Fukuoka City Guides answer what first-time visitors ask: which tonkotsu counters locals rate, how to enjoy the yatai stalls without losing the evening to a queue, where to sit down to motsunabe and mizutaki, and how to reach Dazaifu, Itoshima and Yanagawa by train instead of on a coach tour. Each guide is a short list with an opinion: for every place you get the reason to go, the area and one tip that saves time. It opens in your browser right after payment.

Three places from the guides

Kawaya

Hakataekihigashi, east of Hakata station

A small counter where the owner grills Hakata-style chicken skin skewers right in front of you until they crackle. Order a round of skewers and a drink and watch the grill at work. From the food guide.

Kushida Shrine

Kamikawabata, by Canal City

The guardian shrine of Hakata and the home base of the Yamakasa festival, with a 13-metre float on show and a ginkgo said to be more than a thousand years old. Free to enter. From the things to do guide.

Shiraito Waterfall

Itoshima mountains, 1 to 1.5 hours away

A 24-metre fall in a cedar forest that goes quiet in winter once the tour buses thin out. Walk the short trail, then head down to the coast for an oyster lunch. From the day trips guide.

Plan your days in Fukuoka

Spend day one around Hakata: Kushida Shrine and the Kawabata arcade, the wooden Buddha at Tochoji, motsunabe by the station for dinner and a late bowl of tonkotsu. On day two take the Nishitetsu train to Dazaifu for the shrine and the Kyushu National Museum, then come back for cocktails in Daimyo. Save a wet or slow day for the Fukuoka City Museum, the Asian Art Museum above Nakasu-Kawabata station, a soft udon lunch at the bus terminal and a warm seat at a yatai under its plastic sheets.
