The Füssen City Guides answer the questions every visitor to Ludwig II’s castles ends up asking: how to get a Neuschwanstein tour without gambling on the morning ticket queue, where to eat Kässpatzen and roast pork at fair prices instead of at the foot of the castle path, which lake suits a swim with children and how to reach the Wieskirche without paying for a coach tour. Each guide is a short, honest list that tells you why a place deserves your time, what to order or look out for and one practical tip, and it opens in your browser as soon as you have paid.

Three places from the guides
Markthalle Füssen
Schrannengasse, old town
A granary from the 1400s now holds a handful of food counters under one roof: fish soup and smoked eel rolls at the fish stall, plus cheese, wine, coffee and cake. It is the best quick lunch in Füssen and keeps going when the inns close for the afternoon. From the food guide.
Museum der Stadt Füssen
Kloster St. Mang, Lechhalde
In the 16th century this small town led Europe in making lutes and violins, and the instrument rooms in the former St. Mang abbey show how. Stay for the baroque library and the skeletons of the Dance of Death in St. Anne’s chapel. Entry is about €6. From the things to do guide.
Pilgrimage Church of Wies
Steingaden, about 30 min by car or 45 min by bus 73
From the road it looks like a plain white church alone in the fields. Step inside and the UNESCO-listed rococo interior opens up in gold, stucco and a painted ceiling. Entry costs nothing, but only a few buses a day go there. From the castles, lakes and day trips guide.
Plan your days in Füssen
Day one: take the bus to Hohenschwangau for an early, pre-booked castle tour, climb the Pöllat gorge to the Marienbrücke, then walk round the Alpsee and finish at the Museum of the Bavarian Kings. Eat dinner back in the old town, booked ahead. Day two: stay in Füssen, see the painted courtyard of the Hohes Schloss and the instrument rooms of the town museum, have lunch at the market hall, walk out to the Lechfall and up the Kalvarienberg for both castles in one view, then take a boat on the Forggensee or relax at the Hopfensee. For a rainy or slow day, pair the museums with cake at Konditorei Kurcafe, give children the forest centre at Ziegelwies, or ride out to the Wieskirche in the meadows near Steingaden.
