The Hangzhou City Guides deal with the questions visitors ask before they go: where to eat Dongpo pork and vinegar fish at fair prices, which temples and museums need booking the evening before, how to walk West Lake without fighting the crowds and which water town is worth an early train. Each guide is a tight list with the reason to go, what to order or see and one practical tip per place, and it opens in your browser as soon as you pay.

Three places from the guides
Zhiweiguan
Renhe Lu, Hubin
A Hangzhou name for pastries, dumplings and snacks since the early 1900s, with a quick takeaway counter downstairs and a proper dining room above. The crab and pork xiaolongbao are the reason to come. From the food guide.
Lingyin Temple
Lingyin Lu, west of the lake
The city’s great Buddhist temple, close to 1,700 years old and set among ancient trees. The gate is free but daily visitor numbers are capped, so book ahead and give it two hours. From the things to do guide.
Nanxun Old Town
Huzhou, about 2 hours by bus or train plus bus
Silk merchants built mansions here that blend Chinese and European details, and the town itself costs nothing to wander. Of the water towns in the guide, it draws the smallest crowds. From the day trips guide.
Plan your days in Hangzhou
Day one: walk the Su Causeway and Flower Harbour in the morning, have xiaolongbao at Zhiweiguan for lunch and end at Wulin Night Market. Day two: Lingyin Temple and the carvings of Feilai Peak, then the Longjing tea hills and a jazz set on Nanshan Lu. For a rainy or slow day, keep the free museums, Hu Xueyan’s old house and the canal water bus from Wulinmen Wharf, or take the train to the Suzhou gardens.
