A short look at a real guide: ticking places off, filtering and opening Maps.

The Hue City Guides answer what every visitor to the old imperial capital wonders: where to find the best bún bò before the pots are empty, which royal tombs justify the ride out of town, which pagodas stay quiet and where to go when the rain sets in. Each guide is a short, opinionated list with the reason to go, the area and a practical tip for every place, and it opens in your browser the moment you pay.

Three places from the guides

Lạc Thiện Restaurant

6 Đinh Tiên Hoàng, by the citadel

The family name for bánh khoái: you see each crisp pancake of shrimp and pork come out of the pan, then roll it in herbs and dip it in a dense peanut sauce. From the food guide.

An Hien Garden House

58 Nguyen Phuc Nguyen, Kim Long

A mandarin’s house from the 19th century with carved timber, mother-of-pearl and bonsai, where the host pours tea and tells you its story. From the things to do guide.

Zenith Skybar

50A Hung Vuong, 34th floor

A bar high above the city with the Perfume River and the citadel spread out below. Come between 5pm and 7pm, when the cocktails are two for one. From the nightlife guide.

Plan your Hue days

Day one: be at the Imperial City when the gates open, eat a tray of Hue cakes inside the citadel at lunch, ride out to Thien Mu Pagoda in the afternoon and watch the sun set from a rooftop bar. Day two: book a driver or a Grab for the royal tombs, starting with Tu Duc, then Khai Dinh and Minh Mang, and on a Friday to Sunday finish on the walking street. For a rainy or slow day, keep to the Museum of Royal Antiquities, a cooking class, the hot springs and long coffee stops.
