The Jakarta City Guides deal with what makes the city hard for visitors: where the best street food is and when it opens, how to group the sights so traffic does not eat your day, which rooftops are worth the lift ride and how to get out to the islands or the hills. Each guide is a short, opinionated list with the reason to go, what to order or see and one practical tip for every place, and it is ready in your browser the moment you pay.

Three places from the guides
Sari Bundo
Jalan Ir. H. Juanda, Gambir
A Padang dining room open since 1967. Sit down and the table fills with small plates, and you pay only for the ones you eat. Go straight for the rendang, the tendon curry and the crisp chilli beef. From the food guide.
Istiqlal Mosque
Jl. Taman Wijaya Kusuma, Sawah Besar
Southeast Asia’s biggest mosque, a vast marble prayer hall under a dome 45 metres wide. Entry is free and volunteers take you round. The neo-Gothic cathedral stands just across the road. From the things to do guide.
Bogor Botanical Gardens
Bogor, about 1 hour by commuter train
Two centuries of planting in the middle of Bogor: avenues of giant trees, an orchid house and a wide lawn where deer graze. Catch an early train and you can happily spend three hours here. From the day trips guide.
Plan your days in Jakarta
Day one: walk the centre in the morning with Monas, Istiqlal and the cathedral, eat lunch at Sari Bundo and end with a drink on a Thamrin rooftop. Day two: ride the commuter train to Jakarta Kota for old Batavia, the Fatahillah square museums, Glodok’s Chinatown and the schooners of Sunda Kelapa, then goat fried rice on Jalan Kebon Sirih. When the rain sets in, move indoors to the National Gallery, Museum MACAN or Kidzania. Most museums close on Mondays, so plan around it.
