The Kruger National Park Guides answer what every first safari here raises: which gate to use from Hazyview and how early to be there, where the animals come to you so you can switch off the engine, where to cook a bush breakfast above the river and how to fit Blyde River Canyon into a day off from game drives. Each guide is a short, honest list that tells you why a place is worth it, what to look for or order and one practical tip, and it opens in your browser as soon as you have paid.

Three places from the guides
Garden Shed Restaurant
59 President Street, Graskop
A relaxed, arty place built around a big outdoor fire, which you will be glad of when the mist rolls into Graskop at night. The braai turns out pork chops as well as zebra and crocodile kebabs, with most mains between R180 and R300. From the food guide.
Mathekenyane Hill (Koppie) View Point
About 10 km south of Skukuza
A rough track climbs a granite outcrop to one of the rare spots in the south where you are allowed out of the car. The bushveld spreads out in every direction, elephants or buffalo sometimes cross below, and the roads you have driven suddenly make sense. From the things to do guide.
Three Rondavels View Point
Off the R532, about 1 hr from Graskop
Three rounded, grass-capped peaks shaped like traditional huts rise above Blyde River Canyon, with Blydepoort Dam far below. This view is the reason to drive the Panorama Route to the end instead of turning round at God’s Window. From the safari and day trips guide.
Plan your days in Kruger
Day one: be at Phabeni Gate when it opens, drive towards Skukuza and sit for an hour at Lake Panic Bird Hide, then follow the Sabie River road to a skottel breakfast at Nkuhlu and on to Sunset Dam by Lower Sabie, leaving time to get out before the gates shut and eat in Hazyview. Day two: give the animals a rest and drive the Panorama Route, from Pinnacle Rock and God’s Window to Bourke’s Luck Potholes and the Three Rondavels, with pancakes in Graskop on the way back. For a rainy or slow day, walk the Lowveld National Botanical Garden in Mbombela, take a long lunch at Casterbridge in White River and book a SANParks night drive for the evening.
