See the guide in action

A short look at a real guide: ticking places off, filtering and opening Maps.

The Kuşadası City Guides deal with the questions every visitor here runs into: how to see Ephesus before the cruise coaches pour in, where locals eat a few streets back from the harbour for a fraction of the price, which beaches suit small children and where to spend a long evening of meze, rakı and live Turkish music. Each guide is a short, honest list that explains why a place deserves your time, what to order or look at and one practical tip, and it opens in your browser the moment you have paid.

Ephesus timed to beat the crowds, the Byzantine and Seljuk layers of Selçuk, the old quarter and Pigeon Island, national park coves and the ruins further south.

Family guide

20 places

Gently shelving beaches, two big water parks, an island castle reached on foot, ruins and museums that keep children curious, and food where kids are welcome.

Nightlife guide

20 places

Sunset terraces, Bar Street without the padded bill, meyhane nights with rakı and live music, beach clubs, Şirince wine houses and kokoreç in the small hours.

Three places from the guides

Zümrüt Pide Salonu

Yıldırım Caddesi, Alacamescit

Pide with a thin, crisp base comes straight out of the wood oven into a large courtyard shaded by trees and draped with carpets. Bread and salad arrive without asking, and two people leave full for around €12. From the food guide.

Kaleiçi Camii

Kaleiçi, the walled old quarter behind the harbour

This 17th-century mosque, with its painted interior and coloured glass, sits at the centre of the old quarter. Use it as the starting point for half an hour in the lanes of old houses and tailors, a world away from the bazaar next door. From the things to do guide.

Rum Meyhanesi Kuşadası

Tuna Sokak, old town

A small meyhane where trays of meze go round, the wine is good and Turkish musicians play most nights. By midnight the long tables are singing along. This is how locals spend an evening out. From the nightlife guide.

Plan your days in Kuşadası

Day one: take the early dolmuş to Selçuk and be at the Ephesus gate when it opens, add the Terrace Houses, then walk up Ayasuluk Hill to the Basilica of Saint John and İsa Bey Mosque before lunch in Selçuk and a cool evening in Şirince. Day two: head south to the Dilek Peninsula, swim at İçmeler Koyu, look into Zeus Cave and eat fish in Güzelçamlı, then spend the night at a meyhane with live music in the old town. For a rainy or slow day, mix the Ephesus Archaeological Museum with a lokanta lunch, a wander through the Kaleiçi lanes and the causeway to Kuşadası Castle at sunset.
