See the guide in action

A short look at a real guide: ticking places off, filtering and opening Maps.

The Lake Balaton guides deal with the questions every trip to Hungary’s big lake raises: which shore to base yourself on, how to order fried fish without paying for a whole fish you did not plan on, where the water is shallow enough for toddlers, which winery terraces catch the sunset and how to see the volcanic hills and castles without spending the day in the car. Every guide is a short, honest list that names the town for each place, says why it is worth your time and adds one practical tip, and it opens in your browser the moment you have paid.

Three places from the guides

Kisfaludy Ház Étterem

Badacsony, high on the hill

An old press house far up the slope, with a terrace that looks down over rows of vines to the water. Order the duck liver and a glass of Kéknyelű, Badacsony’s own grape. From the food guide.

Thermal Lake of Hévíz

Hévíz, town centre

A natural lake you can swim in all year, fed by a warm spring far below the surface. Water lilies float on top, a wooden bathhouse stands on stilts, and the water sits around 33°C in summer and rarely falls under 22°C in winter. Three hours is enough for most people. From the things to do guide.

Sea of Stones, Szentbékkálla

Szentbékkálla, Káli basin

Huge rounded sandstone boulders scattered through the woods, worn into strange shapes and made for scrambling. It costs nothing, and the villages of the Káli basin around it are some of the prettiest near the lake. From the beaches and day trips guide.

Plan your days at Lake Balaton

Day one: start on the Tihany peninsula with the lavender house and a walk round the Inner Lake, carry on to Balatonfüred for the promenade under the plane trees, then pick a winery terrace above Badacsony or Csopak for sunset. Day two: head to the western end for the Festetics Palace in Keszthely and an afternoon in the warm water of the Hévíz thermal lake, or take the ferry to the south shore for a shallow beach and fried fish at lunch. For a rainy or slow day, row through the cave lake under Tapolca, give the Balaton Museum an hour and finish with fisherman’s soup and cake.
