Brick Gothic, Hanseatic merchants and ten riddles on Lübeck's island

The Lübeck scavenger hunt is a self-guided city game you play on your phone: you walk across the old town island from landmark to landmark, solve a riddle at each one by looking closely at what is in front of you, and unlock the stories and legends behind it. The Burgtor-to-cathedral route asks for only about 44 minutes of walking across 3.4 km and 10 stops, and once riddles and stories are added the island game comes to about 2 hours, beginning whenever you choose.

Highlights include the Burgtor and the Holstentor, the two surviving city gates, the Hospital of the Holy Spirit, the Buddenbrookhaus of Thomas Mann's novel, St Mary's Church with the tallest brick vault in the world and the town hall beside it. Lübeck's old town is compact and walkable, with brick gables, narrow lanes and church towers always in sight.

From gate to gate and church to church: how the Lübeck game works

Wind holes, a Latin motto and a devil on a stone

The answers are in plain sight once you look: the round openings in the town hall's tall facade walls, the words Concordia domi foris pax on the Holstentor, the little devil beside St Mary's. Every riddle relies on observation and reasoning, never on knowing German.

Buddenbrooks, Memling and Henry the Lion

Each solved riddle opens a chapter of Lübeck's past: the Mann family house on Mengstraße that inspired Buddenbrooks, the Passion altarpiece by Hans Memling in the St Anne museum, the cathedral Henry the Lion founded in 1173. With the audio narration switched on, you hear these chapters between stops.

3.4 km from the northern gate to the southern tip

Walking takes up about 44 minutes of the game: from the Burgtor down through the merchant streets to the market, out west to the Holstentor and back, then south to the cathedral. Google Maps handles directions, and the old town island is compact enough that you never stray far.

Marzipan breaks are allowed

Nobody times you, so stop for coffee and the marzipan Lübeck is famous for whenever you fancy it, then pick the game up later that day or on another one. The Burgtor, where it all starts, stands at the northern end of Große Burgstraße.

Day trippers from Hamburg, families and teams

A day out from Hamburg or a Baltic stopover

Lübeck is under an hour from Hamburg by train, and in about 2 hours the game covers both surviving city gates, St Mary's, the town hall and the cathedral. It works just as well as a stop on the way to or from the Baltic coast.

Children with an eye for devils and bells

Young players like spotting the devil sculpture by St Mary's, hearing about the bells that crashed down in 1942 and still lie broken in the south tower, and counting the pointed roofs of the Holstentor. One adult per team is needed, and the short distances leave time for an ice cream.

Colleagues who split up at the Burgtor

Groups of up to 5, every player with a phone of their own, can leave the northern gate in staggered waves and swap stories at the cathedral. The route keeps to public streets, so there is nothing to hire for the day.

  • Bring a charged smartphone with mobile data; a power bank helps.
  • No entry tickets needed: everything happens outside the buildings. Going inside is optional and paid separately.
  • Family friendly; children must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Not suitable for wheelchair users and difficult with strollers.

The hunt starts at the Burgtor in the north of the old town and leads past the Hospital of the Holy Spirit and Theater Lübeck to the Buddenbrookhaus. From there you visit St Mary's Church and the town hall on the market square, walk out to the Holstentor and come back to St Peter's Church. You then head south past the Museumsquartier St. Annen and finish at Lübeck Cathedral. Brick façades, gates and church walls hold every clue, so nothing on the island costs admission, and if you arrive from the station side you can begin at the Holstentor instead, with the app rearranging the remaining stops.

    The city theatre on Beckergrube is an art nouveau building from the early 20th century, with a decorated facade and a grand foyer. It is Lübeck's main stage for opera, drama and concerts.

    The house with the white baroque facade on Mengstraße belonged to the grandparents of the writers Thomas and Heinrich Mann. Thomas Mann, who later won the Nobel Prize in Literature, made it the home of the merchant family in his novel Buddenbrooks, and today it is a museum about the Mann family.

    Lübeck's merchants and city council built St Mary's in the 13th and 14th centuries next to the town hall and the market. Called the mother church of Brick Gothic, it was the model for about 70 Baltic churches, and its 38.5-metre nave vault is the tallest brick vault in the world. The bells that fell in the air raid of 1942 still lie broken in the south tower.

Built in several stages from the Middle Ages onwards, it is one of the oldest town halls in Germany and still the seat of the mayor and the city parliament. Look for the tall facade walls with round openings, which let the wind blow through.

    The Holstentor is a late Gothic city gate and the best-known symbol of Lübeck. Two massive round towers with pointed roofs flank its gateway, and the Latin inscription Concordia domi foris pax means harmony within, peace outside. Inside, a museum tells the story of the Hanseatic city.

    St Peter's was first recorded in 1170 as one of Lübeck's market churches, together with the forerunner of St Mary's. Burnt out in the air raid of 1942 and later rebuilt, it no longer has a parish and is used for exhibitions and events, and a lift takes visitors up the tower to a viewing platform.

    This museum quarter grew around the former convent of St Anne, built at the start of the 16th century. It shows medieval church art from Lübeck, including Romanesque sculptures from the earlier St Mary's Church and a Passion altarpiece by Hans Memling.

    Diese Schnitzeljagd ist mal eine ganz andere Art L?beck zu erkunden. Alle Sehensw?rdigkeiten, werden mit einbezogen und dies im eigenen Tempo. Neben kleinen Pausen und Besichtigungen vom Rathaus, St. Peter und Co, haben wir so die Zeit auf gut 6 Stunden verl?ngert. Am Ende der Tour h?tte ich mir eine kleine „?berraschung“ gew?nscht oder sowas wie eine „Urkunde“. Gerade f?r Kinder finde ich das immer gut. Leider fing die App nach dem letzten R?tsel einfach wieder von vorne an. Hier k?nnte etwas nachgebessert werden.

Wir fanden es f?r uns als Erstbesucher dieser wunderbaren Stadt alles sehr passend. Besonders gefallen hat uns, dass wir in unserem Tempo die Tour machen konnten. So blieb auch Zeit f?r ein wenig Shopping und ein Stop im Caf? war ohne Probleme m?glich. Also alles ganz entspannt, wie es im Urlaub sein sollte.     Die Aktivit?t war sehr informativ. Dagegen waren wir entsetzt von den L?becker Restaurants. Leider hat uns ein reservierten Restaurant am Morgen abgesagt. Wir, eine Gruppe von 30 Pers ein internatironaler Jugendaustausch mit S?dkorea, sind sehr unfreundlichen abweisend in der Stadt L?beck behandelt worden. Die Koreanischen G?ste und wir waren entsetzt.?ber die Unfreundlichkeit. Leider traf dieses auch auf das Unternehmen “L?becker Marzipan” zu. Dieses Unternehmen sollte doch den Umgang mit Touristen ge?bt sein. L?beck ist uns und unseren G?sten nicht in guter Erinnerung geblieben. Die Rallye, war das einzige Hughlight.

    Die Schnitzeljagd f?hrt einen zu den wichtigsten Sehensw?rdigkeiten L?becks. Da man zu Fu? unterwegs ist, hat man nebenbei die M?glichkeit vieles von der Stadt zu sehen. Die Verkn?pfung mit Maps hat einwandfrei funktioniert. Neben Informationen zu den jeweiligen Zielen, bekommt man nach L?sung des R?tsels auch immer noch ein paar Informationen ?ber L?beck an sich. Die R?tsel waren f?r Erwachsene sehr einfach, was uns aber nicht gest?rt hat und sicher f?r Familien mit Kindern eine tolle Sache ist, weil gemeinsam ger?tselt werden kann. Da man die Infotexte selbst vorliest, kann auch hier variiert werden, ob ?berhaupt gro?es Interesse daran besteht oder es vielmehr darum geht einfach nur zu schauen.

How long is the walk between the Burgtor and the cathedral?

About 44 minutes on foot, covering 3.4 km and 10 stops, inside a game that takes roughly 2 hours in total. The rest of the time goes on solving riddles, listening to stories and taking in the brick façades, and you can break off at any stop and resume later.

Which gate starts the Lübeck hunt, and which church ends it?

It starts at the Burgtor, the northern gate of the old town island, and ends at Lübeck Cathedral on the island's southern edge. If your hotel is closer to the Holstentor or the market, the app can make one of those stops your first.

Do we have to meet a guide at the Burgtor at a set hour?

No meeting point and no set hour: the game has neither a guide nor departure times. After booking online, one ticket per player, your booking reference comes by email; type it into the World City Trail app and begin whenever suits you, with each player following on their own phone.

Do any of the churches or museums on the way charge admission?

Not for the game itself, since the Holstentor, the churches and the museums only appear in the riddles from the outside. If you want to go in, the museum inside the Holstentor, the Museumsquartier St. Annen and the lift up St Peter's tower are paid visits to plan separately.

What makes Lübeck fun for children?

Plenty, with an adult in each team: a devil carved on a stone outside St Mary's and the legend behind it, town hall walls with holes for the wind, a gate with a Latin motto and the story of the bells that crashed down in 1942. Cobbles make pushchairs bumpy in places, and the route is not suitable for wheelchairs.

Besides English, which languages does the Lübeck game offer?

German, French, Italian, Spanish and Dutch, six in total, and each player chooses in the World City Trail app before the Burgtor riddle opens. Families or groups who speak different languages can therefore play side by side.

Yes, it lends itself to that: book a ticket per participant, divide into teams of five or fewer and start them a few minutes apart at the Burgtor, then gather by the cathedral to hear how each team got on. Everything happens on the public streets of the old town, so no venue is required.

What do we need for a couple of hours on Lübeck's island?

Comfortable shoes for the cobbled lanes and a jacket against the wind, which can be brisk this close to the Baltic. Don't forget one charged phone with mobile data per team, plus a power bank if your day in Lübeck will be a long one.
