The Makarska City Guides answer the questions that come up on every trip to this stretch of the Dalmatian coast: where to eat a proper lunch away from the harbour front, how to get up Biokovo to the Skywalk without the mountain road spoiling your day, which pebble beaches suit small children and where to watch the sun go down before a night around the harbour. Each guide is a short, honest list that tells you why a place is worth it, what to order or see and one useful tip, and it opens in your browser as soon as you have paid.

Three places from the guides
Konoba Veliko Brdo
Veliko Brdo village, 10 min by car above Makarska
Up on the mountainside the air is cooler and the stone terrace looks down to the sea. Order the pašticada: it takes three days to cook and comes with pasta made in the kitchen, and a local red goes with it at a fair price. From the food guide.
Seagull Wings Monument
Above Podgora harbour, 9 km south of Makarska
Two concrete wings around 30 metres tall rise over Podgora, put up in 1962 for the partisan navy that was founded here in 1942. Look for the relief of the sea battle, then turn round for the view of the islands. From the things to do guide.
Modro Jezero
Edge of Imotski, about 1 hour by car over Biokovo
The Blue Lake fills a deep sinkhole right beside the town. In summer a zigzag path leads down to the water for a swim; in a very dry year the lake almost drains away and locals play football on the bottom. From the beaches and day trips guide.
Plan your days in Makarska
Day one: see the City Museum and the shell collection at the Franciscan monastery in the morning, walk the Riva and loop around St. Peter’s peninsula, eat lunch in a konoba one lane back from the harbour, then follow the Osejava path to swim at Nugal. Come back for sunset at the lighthouse, a cocktail in the old town and a beer on Marineta. Day two: take an early time slot on Biokovo for the Skywalk and Sveti Jure, eat at Vrata Biokova on the way down and spend the afternoon at Punta Rata in Brela, reached by the coast bus. For a rainy or slow day, mix the market and the Vepric shrine with the botanical garden above Kotišina and a long lunch at Konoba Veliko Brdo.
