The Medellín City Guides answer what first-time visitors want to know: where paisas go for a proper set lunch, how to reach Comuna 13 and the cable cars without paying a tout, which salsa and tango bars belong to locals and how to get to Guatapé on the public bus. Each guide is a short, opinionated list with the reason to go, what to order or look for and one practical tip per place, and it opens in your browser the moment you pay.

Parks and playgrounds, a science centre and planetarium for wet afternoons, cable-car outings and food that suits small appetites.

Three places from the guides
Restaurante Hacienda Junín
Centro, Carrera 49 (Junín) near Calle 52
An open-air dining room one floor above the Junín pedestrian street. Order the bandeja paisa or mazamorra with a coconut lemonade. A reliable first taste of Antioquia, at half the El Poblado price. From the food guide.
Salón Málaga
La Candelaria, Carrera 51 (centre)
A bar that has been pouring since the 1950s, with records on the turntable and a DJ well into his seventies playing tango, cumbia and salsa. The crowd is local, older and friendly, and the beer is cheap. Bring cash. From the nightlife guide.
El Peñón de Guatapé
Guatapé, 2 hours by bus from Terminal del Norte
A granite rock about 200 metres high rising from a reservoir. Climb its 740 steps for the view over green water and islands. Weekend queues by late morning can last an hour, so arrive when it opens. From the day trips guide.
Plan your days in Medellín
Day one: take the Metro to the centre on a weekday morning for Plaza Botero and the Museo de Antioquia, eat a Paisa lunch on the Junín pedestrian street, then ride the Metrocable up to Santo Domingo for the view. End the evening with salsa in Laureles. Day two: go to the Comuna 13 escalators early, spend the afternoon in the Jardín Botánico and finish with craft beer around Segundo Parque. For a rainy or slow day, choose Parque Explora and the planetarium, the Museo de Arte Moderno or the Biblioteca Pública Piloto, and keep Guatapé for the first clear morning.
