The Portofino City Guides answer the questions every trip to this headland raises: where to eat proper pesto and fresh anchovies without paying for the view of the yachts on the piazzetta, how to reach San Fruttuoso when no road goes there, which walk over the promontory suits your legs and when the last boat leaves. Each guide is a short, honest list that tells you why a place earns your time, what to order or look at and one practical tip, and it opens in your browser the moment you have paid.

Three places from the guides
Trattoria da Pezzi
Via Cavour, Santa Margherita Ligure
A plain, busy room on a car-free lane where locals and visitors eat side by side. Order the pesto lasagne layered with potato and green beans, or the pansoti in walnut sauce; mains stay around €12 to €18. From the food guide.
Villa Durazzo
Via San Francesco d’Assisi, above the Santa Margherita harbour
A Genoese villa from the 1600s whose terraced gardens of palms, statues and pebble mosaics look over the bay and cost nothing to walk. A few euros more opens the furnished rooms with their glass chandeliers, and a café and play area make it easy with children. From the things to do guide.
Castello Brown
Portofino, Via alla Penisola, 10 min uphill from the harbour
A fort that has watched over the harbour since the Middle Ages, rebuilt in the 1800s by the British consul Montague Yeats-Brown. Walk through the period rooms to the terraces for the finest view down on Portofino; allow 30 to 45 minutes and about €10. From the beaches and day trips guide.
Plan your days in Portofino
Day one: ride bus 82 from Santa Margherita to Portofino early, climb to Castello Brown and follow the cliff path to the lighthouse, then hike over the hill to San Fruttuoso for the abbey and a pesto lunch by the bay, and take the boat back once you have checked the last departure. Day two: take the train to Camogli, buy cheese focaccia on the seafront, look into the basilica and walk round Castel Dragone, then climb to San Rocco and on down to Punta Chiappa to swim off the rocks before a fish dinner on the harbour. For a rainy or slow day, stay in Santa Margherita for the gardens and rooms of Villa Durazzo and the town’s baroque church, add a morning at the free maritime museum in Camogli and finish with a long trattoria lunch.
