The San Juan City Guides tackle what visitors to Puerto Rico’s capital keep asking: where to eat mofongo without paying cruise-port prices, how to see both Spanish forts on a single ticket, which beaches are calm enough for a winter swim and where Santurce dances on a Friday night. Every guide is a short list with an opinion, giving the reason to go, the area and one practical tip for each place, and it is in your browser the moment you pay.

Three places from the guides
El Jibarito
Calle Sol, Old San Juan
A family-run dining room that has served country-style Puerto Rican cooking for decades. Order the whole fried red snapper with garlic, share it, and ask for a table upstairs where it is calmer. From the food guide.
Plaza del Quinto Centenario
Top of Calle del Cristo, Old San Juan
An open plaza on a hilltop above the Atlantic, crowned by the Tótem Telúrico, a tall ceramic and granite column marking the meeting of Taíno and European worlds. Sit on the steps and take in the sea. From the things to do guide.
Laguna Grande
Las Croabas, Fajardo, 1 hr from San Juan
A bioluminescent lagoon you reach by kayak through a mangrove channel after dark, where every stroke of the paddle lights up the water. Pick a night close to the new moon, when the glow is strongest. From the day trips guide.
Plan your days in San Juan
Day one: be at El Morro when it opens, follow the walls to Castillo San Cristóbal, have a Puerto Rican lunch in Old San Juan and keep the Paseo de la Princesa for sunset, then take a taxi to La Placita de Santurce. Day two: drive east to El Yunque early, swim at Luquillo and eat at the kiosks, and on a dark night paddle out on Laguna Grande in Fajardo. For a rainy or slow day, ride the ferry to Casa Bacardí, spend the afternoon at the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico or the free Museo de San Juan, and keep a mall in reserve.
