See the guide in action

A short look at a real guide: ticking places off, filtering and opening Maps.

The Sibiu City Guides answer the questions that come up on every trip here: where to eat sarmale and Saxon goulash without paying main-square prices, which towers and churches are worth the climb, when the Transfăgărășan is actually open, and how to reach the fortified churches and Sighișoara in a day. Each guide is a short, honest list that tells you why a place earns its spot, what to order or look for and one practical tip, and it opens in your browser as soon as you have paid.

Three places from the guides

Cafe Wien

Old Town, Piața Albert Huet 4

The terrace is perched on the walls above the Lower Town, and a piano plays in the evening. Order cake and coffee, or the schnitzel if you are hungry; no café in Sibiu has a better view. From the food guide.

Pasajul Scărilor

From Piața Huet down to Strada Movilei

A covered stone stairway drops from the cathedral to the Lower Town, under arches and beside a 13th-century wall. It takes two minutes and shows you how the two levels of Sibiu fit together. From the things to do guide.

The Fortified Church of Biertan

Biertan, about 1 hr 20 min by car

Three rings of walls on a hill above a Saxon village guard the grandest of the UNESCO fortified churches. Look for the sacristy lock with 19 bolts and the small room where feuding couples were shut in until they made peace. From the mountains and day trips guide.

Plan your days in Sibiu

Day one: start on Piața Mare, climb the Council’s Tower for the view over the red roofs, cross the Bridge of Lies on Piața Mică and look into the Evangelical Cathedral before taking the Pasajul Scărilor down to the Lower Town for lunch in a wine cellar on Strada Turnului. In the afternoon, follow the walls and towers along Strada Cetății and finish with cake on the terrace of Cafe Wien. Day two: hire a car. From July to October, drive the Transfăgărășan up to Bâlea Lake and stop for trout at Albota on the way back; the rest of the year, head for Biertan and Sighișoara instead. For a rainy or slow day, combine the Brukenthal and the history museum in the Altemberger House (best from Wednesday to Sunday), the frescoed Orthodox cathedral, a morning at the Cibin market and a long brunch.
