See the guide in action

A short look at a real guide: ticking places off, filtering and opening Maps.

The Tulum City Guides settle the questions every visitor brings: where to eat well in the pueblo instead of paying beach-road prices, which cenotes deserve your morning, how to reach the ruins ahead of the crowds and where the evening goes once the sun sets over the jungle. Each guide is a short list with a clear point of view, giving the reason to go, the area and a practical tip for every place, and it opens in your browser as soon as you pay.

The six Tulum guides

Food guide

23 places

Tacos and street food in town, classic Mexican dining rooms, fire-cooked dinners on the beach road and the best coffee, breakfast and sweets.

Things to do guide

24 places

The clifftop ruins, eight cenotes worth the entry, quiet beaches in the national park and art, markets and evenings in town.

Family guide

26 places

Calm lagoons and cenotes with life jackets, Maya sites, monkeys in the jungle, cave swims for rainy days and tacos children will happily eat.

Nightlife guide

24 places

Mezcal and cocktail bars, rooftops for sunset, live salsa and jungle parties, and where to find food late at night.

Day trips guide

25 places

Turtle bays and lagoons up the coast, cenotes along the Cobá road, Maya cities in the forest and longer runs to Valladolid and Sian Ka’an.

Budget guide

23 places

Cheap plates in the pueblo, free beaches, cenotes and ruins that cost little and shared vans instead of taxis.

Three places from the guides

Cetli

Tulum-Cobá road, 2.5 km from the centre

Home-style Mexican cooking in an elegant dining room: deep, dark moles, chiles and stuffed pumpkin. It has earned a mention from Michelin and still charges much less than the beach-road kitchens. From the food guide.

Cenote Taak Bi Ha

Dos Ojos road, 20 km north of Tulum

Wooden stairs lead down into a lamplit cave of blue water hung with stalactites. It is small and usually calm, and the bumpy dirt road is fine for an ordinary car. From the things to do guide.

Muuyal Rooftop

Aldea Zama

A little rooftop with a pool and hammocks looking out over the treetops. Happy-hour margaritas and nachos make it one of the cheaper ways to watch the sun go down. From the nightlife guide.

Plan your days in Tulum

Day one: the ruins at opening time, a swim at Playa Ruinas or Playa Paraíso, a cheap taco lunch in town and sunset on a rooftop. Day two: two cenotes on the Cobá road in the morning, the Cobá ruins after lunch and dinner at a fire-grill table on the beach road. For a rainy or slow day, take a guided swim through the Sac Actún caves, give the Museo Regional an hour and end with cane-juice mojitos and live music at Batey.
