The route: from the Angermuseum to St. Severus’ Church

The Erfurt scavenger hunt starts at the Angermuseum and passes the Luther Monument and the city museum in the Haus zum Stockfisch before crossing the Krämerbrücke. On the Fischmarkt you see the Renaissance house Zum Breiten Herd and the Town Hall, then continue past the Natural History Museum to Domplatz, the cathedral and finally St. Severus’ Church.

The 10 stops cover about 2 km, roughly 28 minutes of walking. You can start anywhere or change the order in the app, with Google Maps guiding you. No entry tickets are needed: every riddle uses the outside of the buildings.

Why explore Erfurt with a city game

Erfurt, the capital of Thuringia, kept much of its medieval centre. The Krämerbrücke, lined with half-timbered houses, is one of the longest inhabited bridges in Europe, and Martin Luther studied here and became a monk in the city. Above Domplatz, the cathedral and St. Severus’ Church stand side by side at the top of a broad flight of steps.

A game makes you look closely at house signs, portals and façades you would otherwise miss, and the stories explain what you just saw. Everyone plays on their own phone, there is no schedule, and you can stop for a Thuringian sausage whenever you like.

  • Start in the morning or late afternoon; the Krämerbrücke is busiest around midday and at weekends.
  • Start the escape game in daylight; its puzzles rely on façade details.
  • Bring a charged phone, a power bank and comfortable shoes; there are cobbles and steps up to the cathedral.
  • Finish with a visit inside the cathedral or a Thuringian sausage on Domplatz, where the Christmas market is held in winter.
