Why explore Maastricht with a city game

Maastricht grew from a Roman crossing of the Maas into one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands. The Sint Servaasbrug dates back to the 13th century, the Helpoort is the oldest surviving city gate in the country, and the Dominicanen bookshop fills a Gothic church. The Vrijthof is lined with cafés, and in 1992 the city gave its name to the Maastricht Treaty.

A game makes you look closely at gables, statues and details you would otherwise pass by, and the stories that follow explain what you have just seen. Everyone plays on their own phone, there is no schedule, and you can stop for a slice of Limburg vlaai whenever you like.

  • Start in the morning or late afternoon: the Vrijthof and the Markt are busiest around midday and on market days.
  • Start the escape game in daylight; its puzzles rely on details on the outside of the buildings.
  • Bring a charged phone, a power bank and comfortable shoes for the cobbled old town.
  • Finish with a stroll along the old city walls in the Stadspark, or browse inside the Dominicanen bookshop.
