Maastricht on a river cruise stop: a self-guided game from the quay

Yes, Maastricht is an easy river cruise stop for our game. Ships moor at the Maasboulevard on the Old Town side of the Maas, and the scavenger hunt starts a few minutes' walk away on the Sint Servaasbrug, the old stone bridge. It takes about 2 hours over a compact, flat 2.6 km route and ends at the Stadspark, also by the river, so the walk back to the ship is short. Verdict: easy on a normal stop.

From the Maasboulevard to the Sint Servaasbrug

  1. Your berth is in the cruise documents. Most river cruise ships moor along the Maasboulevard, on the Old Town side of the river: you walk off the ship, cross the road and you are in town.
  2. Walk along the river to the Sint Servaasbrug, the old stone bridge at the edge of the Old Town, with the Mosae Forum beside it. It is only a few minutes on foot.
  3. If your ship is moored a bit further along the river, simply follow the riverbank until you reach the bridge. Open the World City Trail app on the Sint Servaasbrug and start the hunt whenever you are ready.

Tips for Maastricht when time is short

  • The route is compact (about 2.6 km) and flat, looping through the Old Town and finishing at the Stadspark near the river, so the walk back to the ship is short.
  • If the ship is moored further along the river than expected, follow the riverbank to the Sint Servaasbrug; you cannot miss the old stone bridge.
  • During the summer André Rieu concerts on the Vrijthof, the square and the Old Town are very busy; some cruise lines run special itineraries for them, so allow extra time.
  • The Maaspromenade by the river is pedestrianised for much of the day and makes a pleasant way back after the hunt.
  • The jetties on the Maaspromenade are for local excursion boats, not river cruise ships, so do not mistake them for your berth.
  • No entry tickets are needed for the game, and you can pause for lunch and continue later, as the ticket has no time limit.

Why a self-guided game works on a port day

  • You start when you step off the ship, not at a fixed tour time, and nobody waits for a group.
  • Everyone in your party can follow on their own phone with one booking reference.
  • You can stop for lunch or a swim and carry on later, and end the game whenever you need to head back.
  • Google Maps guides you from stop to stop, and the game needs no entry tickets.

Maastricht river cruise stop: questions

Where do river cruise ships dock in Maastricht?

On the Maas in the city centre, at the Maasboulevard on the Old Town side of the river. Your cruise documents give the exact berth.

Is the Old Town walkable from the ship?

Yes. Ships moor right by the centre: you can walk across the road into town, and the Sint Servaasbrug and the Markt are a few minutes away.

Where does the scavenger hunt finish?

At the Stadspark, a riverside park on the southern edge of the Old Town, so it is a short walk back along the Maas to the quays.

What can I do in Maastricht on a river cruise stop?

Play our 2-hour scavenger hunt from the Sint Servaasbrug past the Markt, the Vrijthof, the Basilica of Saint Servatius and the Helpoort to the Stadspark. You solve a riddle at each stop and hear the stories behind it.

Can I see Maastricht in a day from the ship?

Yes. The hunt covers the main squares and churches of the Old Town in about 2 hours, which leaves plenty of time for lunch and a stroll before all-aboard time.

Do I need to book a time slot?

No. You book online, receive your booking reference by email straight away and start whenever you are ashore. The ticket has no time limit, so it still works if your ship arrives late or your plans change.

What do we need on the day?

A charged smartphone with mobile data, the World City Trail app from the App Store or Google Play, and your booking reference. A power bank helps on a long port day.
