Why explore Sydney with a city game
Modern Sydney began in 1788 when the First Fleet landed at Sydney Cove, today’s Circular Quay. The Museum of Sydney stands on the site of the first Government House, the Victorian Queen Victoria Building and the sandstone cathedrals recall the colonial city, and the walk ends at two world-famous landmarks of the harbour: Jørn Utzon’s Opera House, opened in 1973, and the Harbour Bridge of 1932.
A game makes you look closely at carvings, signs and façades you would otherwise pass by, and the stories that follow explain what you just saw. Everyone plays on their own phone, there is no schedule, and you can stop for a coffee or a snack whenever you like.
- Start in the morning or late afternoon; the harbour is at its most photogenic in the evening light, and the midday sun is strong.
- Start the escape game in daylight; its puzzles rely on details on the façades.
- Pack a power bank and wear comfortable shoes; the game runs on your phone.
- Bring sun protection and water, and finish with a walk through The Rocks or a separately booked Harbour Bridge climb.
