Why explore Athens with a city game
In Athens you can walk from a modern parliament to a 2,500-year-old temple in under an hour. The Evzones guard the Monument to the Unknown Soldier, Plaka’s lanes and Byzantine churches climb towards the rock, and from Areopagus Hill, where the ancient council met, you look up at the Parthenon, built in the 5th century BC for Athena. The Roman-era Odeon of Herodes Atticus still hosts performances.
A game makes you look closely at columns, inscriptions and façades you would otherwise pass, and the stories explain what you just saw. Everyone plays on their own phone, with no schedule and time for a souvlaki.
- Start early in the morning or in the late afternoon, especially from May to September, and bring water and a hat.
- Wear shoes with good grip: the marble rock of Areopagus Hill is polished smooth and can be slippery.
- Start the escape game in daylight and bring a charged phone and a power bank.
- Combine the game with a visit to the Acropolis Museum or the Acropolis site, paid separately, or end with a meal in Plaka.
