The route: from the Pinacoteca Nazionale to Palazzo Piccolomini
The Siena scavenger hunt starts at the Pinacoteca Nazionale and leads to the old hospital of Santa Maria della Scala, the cathedral, the Facciatone and the Baptistery of St John. You then walk down to Piazza del Campo with Palazzo Pubblico and the Torre del Mangia, before the hunt ends at the Loggia del Papa and Palazzo Piccolomini, just off the Campo.
The route covers about 2 km, roughly 24 minutes of walking. Start anywhere or change the order in the app; Google Maps guides you. No entry tickets needed: every riddle uses the outside of the buildings.

Why explore Siena with a city game
Siena’s historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has barely changed since its medieval heyday. The shell-shaped Piazza del Campo hosts the Palio horse race every July and August, Palazzo Pubblico holds Lorenzetti’s frescoes of Good and Bad Government, and the Facciatone is the unfinished wall of a vast cathedral extension abandoned after the Black Death of 1348.
Wandering with a map, you see the famous sights; with a riddle to solve, you start noticing the details around them: dates over doorways, statues, inscriptions. Each answer unlocks the story behind the place, the whole group joins in on their own phones, and you set the pace.
- Start in the morning or late afternoon: day-trippers fill the cathedral square and the Campo from late morning, and the Campo is crowded on Palio days.
- Play the escape game during the day: you need daylight to spot the clues on the buildings.
- Bring a charged phone with mobile data, a power bank and comfortable shoes.
- Finish with a coffee on nearby Piazza del Campo, or book a climb up the Torre del Mangia or the Facciatone panorama separately.
