Yes, Ålesund is easy to see on your own. Ships berth at Stornespiren, Storneskaia or Prestebrygga, about 200 m from the town centre, so you walk to Brosundet canal and the Art Nouveau streets of Kongens gate in 5-10 minutes. Climb the 418 steps to the Aksla viewpoint or take the sightseeing train up. The whole port day is yours on foot, and our city guides help you plan it.
From the cruise port to Ålesund town centre
- All cruise ships use the same quay, with three berths close together: Stornespiren, Storneskaia and Prestebrygga. Your ship's daily programme or the port's call list tells you which one.
- Walk about 200 m into the Art Nouveau centre. Brosundet canal and Kongens gate are 5-10 minutes from the gangway, and every central sight is within about 20 minutes on foot.
- For the Aksla viewpoint, walk to the town park (Byparken) and climb the 418 steps to Fjellstua, about 30-40 minutes one way. Or take the city sightseeing train: it starts at the cruise terminal, runs about every 30 minutes on ship days, stops at Fjellstua and takes about 70 minutes for the full loop.
- Taxis usually wait at the quay. For the Atlantic Ocean Park (Atlanterhavsparken), take FRAM bus 1 to Tuenesvegen and walk 10-15 minutes.

Tips for Ålesund when time is short
- The ship berths almost in the centre: you can walk to everything in the town centre within about 20 minutes.
- Streets are hilly and partly cobbled, and Aksla means 418 steps from the town park. The sightseeing train or a taxi goes to the top if you want to skip the climb.
- On busy cruise days Kongens gate and the Aksla steps get crowded. Go up Aksla early or late in your stay.
- Tourist information is at Skateflukaia, a short walk from the quay, and on ship days staff are also on the cruise quay in the morning.
- Free public toilets in the centre are at Lorkenestorget and at Kongens gate 13, beneath Paviljongen.
- Open the city guides on board while you have Wi-Fi: they work offline, so the lunch tip and the next sight are on your phone without mobile data.
Why take our city guides ashore
- They work offline, so you don’t need mobile data or roaming in port.
- All our guides for the city in one place, from where to eat to what to see.
- A short list of places worth your limited time, with a tip for each one.
- Buy before you sail and open them on your phone as soon as you step ashore.
