The Ålesund City Guides deal with the questions every visitor runs into: where to eat a proper bowl of fish soup at lunch prices instead of paying double at dinner, how to eat well on a Sunday when half the kitchens are shut, whether to drive to Geiranger or ride the ferry from Hellesylt, and what to do with children when the coastal rain sets in. Each guide is a short, honest list that tells you why a place deserves your time, what to order or look for and one practical tip, and it opens in your browser the moment you have paid.

Three places from the guides
Anno Restaurant
Apotekergata 9B, on Brosundet
A former fish warehouse right on the canal, with a terrace that hangs over the water. Order the fish soup: rich and creamy, packed with cod, salmon and prawns and served with bread baked in-house. It is the dish people come back for; the rest of the menu is decent backup. From the food guide.
Aksla Viewpoint
Top of the 418 steps above the Town Park
At the top of the steps the whole town lies below you, spread across its islands, with open sea to the west and the jagged Sunnmøre Alps to the east. No ticket, no closing time, and the evening light is the best of the day. From the things to do guide.
Gudbrandsjuvet
Fv63 above Valldal, about 2 hours by car
The river forces its way through a slot in the rock that it has polished into smooth round bowls, and steel walkways let you stand right above the rushing water. Twenty free minutes on the road up to Trollstigen, and the café on site bakes good cinnamon buns. From the day trips guide.
Plan your days in Ålesund
Day one: wander the Art Nouveau streets around Brosundet and buy the combined ticket at the Art Nouveau Centre, which also gets you into KUBE and the Fisheries Museum. Have fish soup for lunch on the canal, walk out to the Molja lighthouse, then climb the 418 steps from the Town Park to Aksla in the evening light and book Le Sund for dinner. Day two, in summer: drive to Geiranger via the Linge to Eidsdal ferry, stop at Ørnesvingen for the view down to the Seven Sisters, visit the Norwegian Fjord Centre and go up to Dalsnibba only if the webcam shows clear skies. Outside the mountain road season, swap in the Romsdal gondola or the Atlantic Ocean Road. For a rainy or slow day, spend the morning with the penguins at the Atlantic Sea-Park, warm up at the Bybadet pool and finish with a cinnamon bun at Racoon Coffee.
Questions about the Ålesund guides
What do the Ålesund City Guides include?
Four guides covering 80 places: food, things to do, family and day trips. Every entry tells you why it is worth going, where it is, notes on opening and one tip you can use.
Do I need a car for the fjord trips from Ålesund?
Not for all of them. Buses reach the islands, Hellesylt for the Geiranger ferry and Åndalsnes, but a hire car makes most of the day trips far easier. The day trips guide says which is which, and that Trollstigen and Dalsnibba close in winter while the coast and the ferries run all year.
How do I get the guides after paying?
The links appear on your order confirmation page and in the email that follows. They open in the browser of any phone, tablet or laptop, with no app to install and no account to create. Load each guide once while online and it keeps working offline.
Which languages are the Ålesund guides available in?
The guides open in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Dutch and Polish. You can switch the language inside the guide at any time.
How much do the Ålesund guides cost?
One guide is €4.99, two are €8.99 and the full set of four is €15.99.
