Chania on a cruise stop: a self-guided city game from Souda port

Yes, Chania works well on a cruise stop, as long as you budget the transfer. Nearly all ships dock at Souda Port in Souda Bay, about 7 km east of Chania, so you cannot walk into town. A paid cruise-day shuttle takes about 15-25 minutes and a taxi about 15 minutes. The hunt starts at the Aviation Memorial Monument, takes about 2 hours around the compact old town and the Venetian Harbour, and fits a normal port day with a comfortable margin.

From Souda port to Chania old town

  1. Souda is a working ferry and naval port about 7 km from Chania, too far to walk. On cruise days a paid shuttle bus leaves from beside the port terminal for Chania town centre; the ride takes about 15-25 minutes. There is no free shuttle.
  2. Chania Urban Buses line 13 (Souda Port – Chania – NNK) also links the port with the city. Tickets are cheaper bought at a kiosk before boarding, and the bus is not timed to ship arrivals, so check the timetable on chaniabus.gr.
  3. Taxis wait at the port and take about 15 minutes, but they can run short right after a ship has arrived; the shuttle is usually the quickest way in.
  4. In town, open the app and let it guide you to the Aviation Memorial Monument, the first stop. From there the hunt heads to the Sabbionara Bastion at the eastern end of the Venetian Harbour.
  5. On the rare tender call, small ships anchor off Chania and land you right in the Venetian Harbour, inside the old town; in a swell, tenders can be suspended or the call moved to Souda.

Tips for Chania when time is short

  • Souda is about 7 km from Chania: budget the shuttle or bus each way and get back to the shuttle stop with time in hand before all-aboard.
  • Taxis at Souda are limited right after arrival, so the shuttle is usually the quickest way into town.
  • The old town streets are uneven and can be slippery, so wear shoes with a good grip.
  • Bring water and sun protection in summer: the harbour front and the old-town lanes get very hot around midday.
  • On a tender call into the Venetian Harbour you land right in the old town, but tenders can be suspended or the call moved to Souda in a swell.
  • Keep an eye on your belongings in the busy harbour area.

Why a self-guided game works on a port day

  • You start when you step off the ship, not at a fixed tour time, and nobody waits for a group.
  • Everyone in your party can follow on their own phone with one booking reference.
  • You can stop for lunch or a swim and carry on later, and end the game whenever you need to head back.
  • Google Maps guides you from stop to stop, and the game needs no entry tickets.
