Hamburg on a cruise stop: a self-guided city game from the port

Yes, if you head straight into town. Hamburg has four cruise terminals; the handiest is Cruise Center HafenCity, with the U4 station Überseequartier right outside, while Altona and Steinwerder are further out. From HafenCity the U4 gets you to Jungfernstieg, a short walk from the Town Hall (Rathaus), in about 10-15 minutes. The scavenger hunt starts there, takes about 3 hours over 4.9 km and ends in the Speicherstadt, close to HafenCity. Verdict: fits if you go straight there.

From Cruise Center HafenCity to the Rathaus

  1. From Cruise Center HafenCity, inside the Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier, take the U4 from Überseequartier one stop to Jungfernstieg and walk a few minutes to the Rathaus: about 10-15 minutes in all. Baakenhöft, also in HafenCity, is about 50 m from a metro station.
  2. From Cruise Center Altona, take HVV ferry 62 from the Dockland pier next to the terminal to Landungsbrücken, then the U3 to Rathaus. This takes clearly longer than from HafenCity.
  3. From Cruise Center Steinwerder there is no metro: walk about 450 m to Argentinienbrücke, take HVV ferry 73 to Landungsbrücken and then the U3 to Rathaus. Bus 256 to the S-Bahn is the other option.
  4. A taxi takes about 15-25 minutes from any terminal, and there are taxi ranks at all of them.

  2. 0:15Start the scavenger hunt at the Rathaus and set off towards St. Petri and the Chilehaus.
  3. 1:30Halfway: the Mahnmal St. Nikolai and St. Katharinen, before the route turns towards the harbour.
  4. 3:15Finish at the Steinerner Orientteppich in the Speicherstadt, after the Internationales Maritimes Museum and the Speicherstadtmuseum.
  5. 3:30Walk back to Cruise Center HafenCity, close to the finish, and be on board at least 1 hour before all-aboard time.

Tips for Hamburg when time is short

  • Confirm your terminal before you go: HafenCity is a short metro hop from the centre, while Steinwerder needs a ferry or a taxi.
  • An HVV day ticket covers the U-Bahn, S-Bahn, buses and harbour ferries, so one ticket does for the whole day.
  • The route is flat but about 4.9 km long, with about 64 minutes of walking, so wear comfortable shoes.
  • The hunt finishes in the Speicherstadt area, close to Cruise Center HafenCity, so the way back from that terminal is short.
  • If you return by ferry to Steinwerder or Altona, keep a buffer of 45-60 minutes before all-aboard time.
  • You can pause the game in the app and carry on later, for example for a quick lunch between the Rathaus and the Speicherstadt.

Why a self-guided game works on a port day

  • You start when you step off the ship, not at a fixed tour time, and nobody waits for a group.
  • Everyone in your party can follow on their own phone with one booking reference.
  • You can stop for lunch or a swim and carry on later, and end the game whenever you need to head back.
  • Google Maps guides you from stop to stop, and the game needs no entry tickets.

Hamburg cruise stop: questions

Which Hamburg cruise terminal is closest to the centre?

Cruise Center HafenCity in the Überseequartier. The U4 station is directly outside, and Jungfernstieg, near the Rathaus, is one stop away.

How do I get from Steinwerder to the city centre?

There is no metro. Walk about 450 m to Argentinienbrücke and take HVV ferry 73 to Landungsbrücken, take bus 256 to the S-Bahn, or take a taxi.

How do I get from Cruise Center Altona to the centre by public transport?

Take HVV ferry 62 from the Dockland pier next to the terminal to Landungsbrücken, then the U3 or the S-Bahn into the centre.

Is the Hamburg scavenger hunt too long for a cruise stop?

Not if you go straight there. The hunt takes about 3 hours; from HafenCity the start is about 10-15 minutes away and the finish is close to the ship, while from Altona or Steinwerder you should allow extra time each way.

Do I need to book a time slot?

No. You book online, receive your booking reference by email straight away and start whenever you are ashore. The ticket has no time limit, so it still works if your ship arrives late or your plans change.

What do we need on the day?

A charged smartphone with mobile data, the World City Trail app from the App Store or Google Play, and your booking reference. A power bank helps on a long port day.
