Yes, Heraklion is easy to see on your own during a cruise stop. Ships berth at the Port of Heraklion, next to the Venetian Harbour and about 1.2 km from the centre. A shuttle bus inside the port takes you to the gate, then it is a 20–25 minute walk past Koules Fortress to Lions Square. See the Morosini Fountain, the Venetian Loggia and Agios Minas Cathedral. Our city guides help you plan the day.
From the cruise port to Heraklion old town
- Ships berth at piers II, III or IV–V, normally without tendering. A shuttle bus runs continuously inside the port from the ship to the passenger terminal and port gate area in about 5 minutes; it does not go into town, and the return pickup is at the same spot.
- From the gate, walk along the seafront past the Venetian Harbour and Koules Fortress, then up 25th August Street to Lions Square and the Morosini Fountain: about 20–25 minutes, mostly flat with a gentle rise at the end.
- If you prefer to ride, taxis wait in front of the port gates.
- For Knossos (about 5 km), take city bus line 2 to the end of the line, from the port stop or the bus station just across the road; the ride takes about 20–25 minutes.

Tips for Heraklion when time is short
- The walk into town is mostly flat along the seafront, with a gentle rise up 25th August Street to Lions Square.
- The Venetian Harbour mole and Knossos have little shade: bring a hat, sunscreen and water.
- The port terminal has toilets, Wi-Fi and a tourist information desk, but no luggage lockers.
- Buses to Knossos fill up when several ships are in port, so go early and allow extra time to get back.
- Most regular shops close on Sundays; mainly tourist shops stay open. Our city guides work offline, so you can use them without mobile data.
Why take our city guides ashore
- They work offline, so you don’t need mobile data or roaming in port.
- Six guides in one: where to eat, what to see, what to do with kids, going out, day trips and saving money.
- A short list of places worth your limited time, with a tip for each one.
- Buy before you sail and open them on your phone as soon as you step ashore.
