The Heraklion City Guides answer the questions every visitor to Crete’s capital has: which tavernas Cretans choose over the photo menus, how to see the Minoan treasures in the right order, where the evening goes after dinner and which bus takes you to Phaistos, Rethymno or a south-coast beach. Each guide is a short, opinionated list with the reason to go, the area and one practical tip for every place, and it opens in your browser as soon as you pay.

Three places from the guides
Peskesi
Kapetan Charalampi, old town
The Cretan restaurant everyone in town talks about, cooking with produce from the owners’ own farm. Order the barley rusk salad and the slow-cooked goat, and leave room for the halva that arrives free at the end. From the food guide.
Rempetiko Ntouzeni
Antistaseos 75, south of the centre
A tavern given over to rebetiko, the Greek blues, with a band playing live several nights a week and a crowd that sings every line. It sits outside the old town, so plan a taxi home. From the nightlife guide.
Minoan Palace of Phaistos
63 km south-west, bus from Station B
Crete’s second palace stands on a hill above the Messara plain with Mount Ida behind it, far quieter and less rebuilt than Knossos. The Phaistos Disc was found here; the original waits in the Heraklion museum. From the day trips guide.
Plan your days in Heraklion
Day one: start at the Archaeological Museum, then take the city bus to Knossos so the palace makes sense, have lunch in the lanes around Agios Titos and walk the breakwater to Koules for sunset before a drink on Korai. Day two: an early bus south to Phaistos and Gortyna, or west to Rethymno, then a meze dinner back in town. For a rainy or slow day, mix the Kotsanas technology museum, the icon collection beside Saint Minas cathedral and a long Cretan lunch.
