Yes, Lisbon works very well on a cruise stop. Most ships dock at the Lisbon Cruise Terminal at Santa Apolónia, on the river below Alfama. The Blue Line metro takes about 10 minutes from there to Restauradores, next to Rossio Square, where our scavenger hunt starts; you can also walk along the river and up Rua Augusta. The hunt takes about 2 hours and ends at Lisbon Cathedral, a short downhill walk from the terminal. Easy on a normal port day.

Price range: 4.99 € through 19.99 €From Santa Apolónia cruise terminal to Rossio Square
- Leave the terminal and walk to Santa Apolónia metro station right next to it. Take the Blue Line (Linha Azul) 3 stops to Restauradores, which is next to Rossio Square; the ride takes about 10 minutes.
- Prefer to walk? Follow the riverfront west to Praça do Comércio (10-20 minutes), then go straight up flat, pedestrianised Rua Augusta through Baixa to Rossio.
- In a hurry or not keen on walking? Taxis wait at the terminal, and the ride to Rossio takes about 10 minutes.
- If your ship is at Alcântara or Rocha Conde de Óbidos, west of the centre, walking in is not sensible: use the cruise line's shuttle (about 10-15 minutes, usually to the Praça do Comércio and Baixa area) or a taxi.
A Lisbon port day, hour by hour
- 0:00Off the ship at Santa Apolónia and a few steps to the metro station.
- 0:20Out at Restauradores, open the app and start the hunt on Rossio Square.
- 1:00Past the Palácio Foz and up to the Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara for the view over the city.
- 1:40São Roque Church, Largo de Camões and the Teatro São Carlos in Chiado, then down to Praça do Comércio.
- 2:20Finish at Lisbon Cathedral (Sé) on the edge of Alfama; time for a coffee nearby.
- 2:50Short walk downhill to the terminal, back on board well ahead of all-aboard time.
Tips for Lisbon when time is short
- Lisbon is hilly and its cobbles get slippery: the climb from Restauradores to the Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara is steep, so wear shoes with grip.
- The Glória funicular between Restauradores and São Pedro de Alcântara has been out of service since its accident in September 2025, so plan to walk up.
- Tram 28 is scenic but often packed, and it will not save you time on a port day.
- The game finishes at the Cathedral, close to the cruise terminal, so you end near your ship rather than across town.
- There is no fixed start time and no guide to wait for: pause for a pastry in Baixa and carry on when you are ready.
- Keep at least an hour in hand before all-aboard time, and more if your ship is at Alcântara and you rely on a shuttle.
Why a self-guided game works on a port day
- You start when you step off the ship, not at a fixed tour time, and nobody waits for a group.
- Everyone in your party can follow on their own phone with one booking reference.
- You can stop for lunch or a swim and carry on later, and end the game whenever you need to head back.
- Google Maps guides you from stop to stop, and the game needs no entry tickets.
Lisbon cruise stop: questions
Where do cruise ships dock in Lisbon?
Most dock at the Lisbon Cruise Terminal at Santa Apolónia / Jardim do Tabaco, on the riverfront below Alfama. When it is full, ships use the older Alcântara or Rocha Conde de Óbidos terminals further west.
Can I walk from the Lisbon cruise terminal to the city centre?
Yes, from Santa Apolónia: Alfama is a few minutes away and Praça do Comércio about 10-20 minutes along the river. From Alcântara it is about 30 minutes or more, so a shuttle or taxi is better.
How do I get from Santa Apolónia cruise terminal to Rossio?
Take the metro Blue Line from Santa Apolónia to Restauradores, 3 stops and about 10 minutes; the station is right next to Rossio. You can also walk via Praça do Comércio and Rua Augusta.
Do I need entry tickets for the sights on the hunt?
No. You see the stops from outside and from public squares and streets, so all you need is your phone with the World City Trail app.
Do I need to book a time slot?
No. You book online, receive your booking reference by email straight away and start whenever you are ashore. The ticket has no time limit, so it still works if your ship arrives late or your plans change.
What do we need on the day?
A charged smartphone with mobile data, the World City Trail app from the App Store or Google Play, and your booking reference. A power bank helps on a long port day.
Port and transport details checked in November 2026. Docking positions and timetables change, so always check your ship’s all-aboard time and your cruise line’s port information before you set off.
